Rhode Island's major gun law change for 2026 is the Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025, effective July 1, 2026, which prohibits manufacturing, selling, or transferring specific semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, though current lawful owners can keep them. Key features include defining "assault weapons" by features (pistol grips, folding stocks, etc.), raising the minimum age to buy firearms/ammo to 21, banning large-capacity magazines, and requiring secure storage, with penalties up to 10 years in prison for violations.
Key Provisions Effective July 1, 2026:
  • Prohibited Firearms: Bans the sale, manufacture, and transfer of certain semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and handguns with features like pistol grips, folding stocks, threaded barrels, and detachable magazines.
  • Possession Allowed: Individuals lawfully possessing these firearms before July 1, 2026, can keep them ("grandfathered"), but must follow storage and transport rules.
  • Age Increase: The minimum age to purchase any firearm or ammunition increases from 18 to 21.
  • Large-Capacity Magazines: Sales of magazines holding more than 10 rounds remain banned.
  • Secure Storage: A strong secure storage law requires firearms to be stored securely when not in use.
  • Penalties: Violations carry severe penalties, including up to 10 years in prison, fines up to $10,000, and firearm forfeiture.
What This Means for 2026:
  • New Purchases Restricted: You cannot buy or sell many common semi-automatic rifles or shotguns after July 1, 2026, but existing owners can keep them.
  • Permits & Age: You must be 21 to buy firearms or ammo, and concealed/open carry permits still require a showing of need.
  • Legal Challenges: The law faces anticipated legal challenges, but currently stands as law for 2026.

So you can keep your AR but can’t sell it?
Pistol mags over 10 rounds are illegal I guess. That will just stop crime in its tracks…just look at the Biden/Brady bill from the 90’s. It had no measurable effect after 10 years and was quietly canceled by President Bush.
How about putting criminals in jail and keeping them there? A novel concept I guess.

The new 2026 gun laws in RI spark debate about safety and rights; meanwhile conversations around unrelated issues like hybrid seeds in Pakistan highlight global policy complexities and differing priorities in public discourse.

Not sure those of us who regularly visit a gun forum to discuss various aspects of firearms are educated/have experience to even begin to speak on hybrid seeds (speaking for myself, others here may have such knowledge). But welcome to the forum…

i don't even wanna live here no more myself.

1 daughter and 1 son, are contemplating selling thier homes and moving to florida.

i think they will do it too.

i say, good for them, if they can escape...but for me and the wife, too many variables for us to leave at our ages now.
Don’t count it out. Change of scenery may do you good and you can still take your naps in florida.
