My dogs have different barks depending on what they sense. I get concerned at what I call their "get your gun Papa" bark, which up till now has just announced an opossum on the porch. Not to be confused with the "UPS Delivery" bark, or "The Grandkids Are Here" bark.
Likewise. I've become desensitized to the 4 legged flea bags barking at a mutt on tv, and to every other useless bark with exception of the "someone is there bark." When they let out the "someone is there" bark, I strap up.

I keep a pistol, kids wooden bat, kukri and a shotty next to my bed LOL. More tools in your toolbox right?

I miss the good old days of a Louisville slugger and a set of steel toe boots. Now I have enough ammo in 9/40/10 to wake up the neighbors. If that doesn’t work then time to get out the shotgun. Of course the neighborhood dogs love to talk to each other so I have time to become reinforcement.

I’m also classified as a grumpy type by people that don’t know me. I grew up in Chicagoland area by Vietnam era Airman. I also have jarheads friends (also belong to the Marine Corps league) so I picked up some bad habits.

While I have a 45 close by and wife had a K frame alone with another item for anyone coming in uninvited.

What gets overlooked and I recommend for anyone wanting a king arm (it really shines for those that are not into training)
Is a Ruger 10/22 with CCI solids. (Any 22 really but Rugers are pretty good)

They generally are easy for someone to point and the 16-20” barrel gives the 22lr some great velocity. The solids
Flattens out and get to vitals (they don’t bounce around like the farmers takes say and that’s coming from a Trama surgeon that teaches Tactical Anatomy) and the majority of good torso hits with a 22 LR from a rifle tend to be fatal.
Federal Punch in .22lr is a spicy little round. Out of a 20 or 24” barrel (i don’t remember) it is traveling at 1700fps.

Edit: 1650fps out of a 24” barrel.

I understand that, back in the 40s I lived in East Oakland California and the cops avoided the area.

When taking an undergraduate criminal justice course 50 years or so ago we interviewed some career burglars in the state Penitentiary and asked what concerned them enough to make them bypass a house. Big dogs was number 1 on the list. Followed by nosy neighbors, security lighting, and making noise while entering. Armed homeowners was low on the list.
I guess they will sh** themselves when the first bullet hits them in a vital spot. I bet you the next time they will consider armed homeowners if they live thru it.

Yeah those days are hard to forget but not worth doing anymore. I’m trying to focus on doing better than my past. Yes I’m lucky that I wasn’t that stupid (but still stupid enough) as a kid. I still say “When life gives you lemons, freeze them, then throw them back”.
