5.7X28 School

Ozarker

Master Class
I've been reading a bit about the FN and Ruger autos in 5.7mm, the ammo cost is about the same or cheaper than the 9mm. Seems this caliber was designed for self defense and created for NATO, used in LE and militaries.

What other 5.7s are there, what is the best use for this round, is it good for EDC? Just school me!

I have a ruger in 5.7 and the ammo is not cheap as a 9mm. Cheap as i have found it is 50 cent a round. It is coming down in price though. When i bought mine it was hard to find and near a dollar a round. Its not a bad round. About no recoil. PSA makes one that is half of the others.

Palmetto. S&W, and Keltec all make pistols in 5.7. It’s an interesting little round (think .22 Mag rifle ballistics in a handgun). It’s pricy to shoot compared to 9 but the price is coming down. It was originally designed as a PDW for rear echelon troops/armor troops, etc. with capability to defeat body armor at shorter ranges than a typical rifle. (However a a civilian the AP ammo is not an option (nor really needed anyway). From a longer tube it’s similar to the old .22 Hornet. Not a bad round, but certainly not a powerhouse. For the recoil sensitive it might be a good option (better than a .22 WMR pistol). It’s a fairly high pressure cartridge. Most 5.7 pistols are substantially larger than the common 9 mm ccw’s like a P365/Hellcat etc. (think full size pistol vs subcompact). Not my choice for reasons of ammo cost, pistol size, and energy vs a 9/45/10. Buddy has two (Ruger and Palmetto) that he loves to shoot because of the .22 like recoil, but he doesn’t carry either. Know another guy with one of the new KT’s (smallest 5.7 out there) who does carry it and loves it.

Brother has the PSA version, loves it, shoots very well, like Belt said, ammo is not cheap yet

If Shibsdog will permit me to condense :

Intended to penetrate then standard Russian Body Armor , using an AP projectile that is not available to the public .

Other than that , think of it as a Reloadable .22WMR .

The .22 TCM is cheaper. It also speeds along at 2,000FPS. Now if you are just wanting 5.7x28 ignor the sentence before this one. (y) ;)

Im a huge fan of 5.7x28. I run a FN Five-seveN and a Masterpiece Arms (think Mac 10 met a MP7 and had a love child). The Masterpice uses FN mags so that a plus.

As for ammo, pinking grade ammo usually weights about 40 grs. Those rounds do typically cost more than 9mm plinking ammo. Self defense rounds in 9mm and 5.7 cost about the same (about $1.00 a shot). Self defense ammo for 5.7 is usually in the 27 to 30 grain range. There are civilian self defense rounds that are designed to penetrate armor including hard plates. The good stuff will penetrate level 3 armor plates. There are also civilian specialty rounds that will penetrate level 4

22TCM isnt really available and it doesnt perform like 5.7x28. ONLY Rock Island makes a 22 TCM gun and ammo. 22TCM is an interesting cartridge but its not in the same realm as 5.7x28

Hmmm, Russian body armor, do I really need that? Will it take a razorback down?
That is one wicked looking bullet!
The Ruger 57 was $360, missed that one, it's back to $5xx.00, but if it's that good then that's still ok.

Pistol or carbine?

It is an interesting but not inexpensive round. The KelTec is a not at all small but still carry-able pistol. The Ruger/FN too large. That's based on cargo pocket carry which is my only carry method. Good luck with your decisioning.

not inexpensive round
Again, the "tactical" rounds are no more expensive than other "tactical" cartridges. They are about $1.00 a shot. ONLY the plinking rounds are more expensive than other caliber plinkers

I regularly carry my FN Five-seveN in a belt holster under a vest or untucked shirt

I never used "tactical" in my comment. Just a general observation. I use Midway for convenience and familiarity. They aren't the best price out there but it works for comparisons. The least expensive .38 special is 45c per round. The least expensive 5.7x28 is 55c per round. And most people would likely go through more rounds of 5.7 than .38 in an average session at a dime a pew. It's interesting and probably a great round to enjoy. And a not inexpensive round. Then again, other than a (very) few .22lr offerings, what is now days.
