Ammunition Question

Where do you people Live? I'm assuming WV stands for West Vladikavkaz. ;)8777777777777777777777777777777777777777l/ (thats what the cat thinks. he felt that his opinion mattered while I got another cup of coffee). We live in Maine and if you're not familiar with the weather it occasionally gets a bit brisk here. I know for a fact that .22lr will sail through the hair and hide of a moose. 9mm, 38spl, 380, etc. not penetrating winter clothing is way down on my list of concerns.
By all means now bring on the horror stories and outlying examples proving I'm wrong.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
West Virginia, c'mon. I like the sense of humor and glad to hear you don't have to worry about robbery by dope fiends in a parking garage after work though.

Guess u know more than the scientists and phd's at Hornady and every other manufacturer on the planet lol .

You may have never thought about the effects of fabric and clothing on the performance of ammo. But clothing — especially heavy clothing —has a lot to do with how the bullet expands upon impact. Conventional hollow point bullets often experience tip clogging as the bullet passes through light and heavy clothing, which diminishes expansion and causes unreliable bullet performance.

This. My reasoning for presenting the question. I go with facts and experience, not just opinions. I'm not here to argue points but to tap into the real world knowledge base that I'm sure is on the forum. Common sense and curiosity brought this question to mind, so I came here to present it.

So, what's the verdict, how far from the shooter do you need to be to have your Northface Coat stop a 9mm?

Maybe 350 yards? I've never heard of anyone shooting a 9mm or any firearm caliber for that matter that was stopped by a winter coat, notwithstanding some bearskin off a polar bear......
I didn't say stop the bullet. So given that you've offered nothing to the knowledge base, your comment is useless in this discussion.....

In defense of our Neophyte Theead Starter , the legitimate subject ( almost always) isn't about the handgun projectile not penetrating at all . It's about if they will Expand somewhat as intended , or be effected by the multiple thick layers of clothing, such to not expand , or only minimally .

Hence the plethora of testing thru either specific layers ( FBI ) or 4 layers of denim ( IWBA) .

Look at weather data , USDA Hardiness Zones , the species of native trees and plants . The mountains of West Virginia get Cold . The climate is a lot closer to New England than would be suggested by merely the Lattitude .

It's not that the Northface coat will stop the bullet . It's ( potentially) whether the Carhart , leather vest , two flannel shirts , and waffle weave longhohns will clog the cavity , such that it performs akin to a FMJ , instead of expanding more or less as intended.

This is a big part of the whole Schick of Critical Defense/ Duty , and all the Flying Screwdriver Bullets as a class . [ Plus all the Old Old School people, pointing to this phenomenon, in the context of " ... and .45 , .44 , .41 , etc Don't Shrink . " ]

Sorry O.P. , but in full disclosure :

West Virginia ( and adjacent parts of neighboring states ) are Ground Zero of the current round of Narcotics Addiction . Per capital more overdose deaths , and junkies , than on the Coasts, and major urban areas .

Oxy ( aka Hillbilly Herion ) started there , and took 5 -10 years to spread to the cities . After Oxy supplies tightened ( aka got very expensive for the Real Thing ) , Mexican Brown filled the gap . Plus , if not as much as parts of Midwest, their share of Meth also .

Not hating. I Like WV . I may or may not own property there or retire there . Just making the point of being alert & prepared anywhere & everywhere.

I'm an addictions Nurse, the area where I work overflows with that population and some aren't afraid to attempt to take what someone won't willingly give. We've had citizens robbed at knife and gunpoint because they wouldn't give money when asked. Hand to hand, I'm fine I've been there. Facing someone who's under the influence of drugs or withdrawing, erratic and has a weapon is a totally different situation.
