Belt Carry J Frame

So I complain about bigger grips and belt carry of the J Frame, saying that if you are going to do that at least go to a K Frame snubby. Or a three inch J frame for the better sights at the absolute least. But I have to confess, I don't follow that advice very often. If it is a pocket carry day, it is a J Frame all the way. But when it goes to belt carry, the snubby I reach for is the Smith and Wesson 696 five shot .44 Special. Because .44 Special makes a lot bigger holes than a .38 Special.

That is one handsome revolver! It could co-star in a 70's cop movie.
 
the .44 Special is one of my favorite cartridges. I also own a 696 and its a great gun. (y)
I also notice that yours is the no dash version like mine. These were some of the last of the old time S&Ws. With the dash 1 version the 696, like all S&Ws at the time, they went to the frame mounted firing pin and MIM parts. You'll be happy to know that the no dash 696s like yours and mine are worth considerably more than the later -1 and -2 models. ;)
BTW: I agree. Bigger holes are better! 😁

 
Thanks! That is the great thing about the .44 Special...the recoil pulse is milder. Like Anchorite said, some guns or cartridges (or combinations of both) have a recoil pulse that are downright punishing. But the .44 Special being a low pressure cartridge spreads out the recoil punch over a longer period, think push vs punch. With 200 grain full wadcutters from Underwood at 1000 fps it is very controllable. But it hits hard and punches a full 44 caliber hole.

Bought a model 38, IIRC, the humpback Airweight, in 1971. Carried since. Also have a37 and a 60., but prefer the original. Have the semi-auto Bodyguard also. I have 2 residences;; Oro Valley, AZ,and Cedar City, UT. Both are “safe” communities which I chose, because of that factor. At 80, I am still capable of taking care of myself and my family. Retired out of L.A., and never hope to go back…AaH tried to kill me with a Bryco, which jammed and I marked him for evidence, with my 5904. Those who I knew who stayed there,now regret it or are too old to move. Sorry, but that is my take…Semper fi
