Battle of the Defensive Shotguns

I guess I should have started a shotgun red dot poll. Aside from Mossberg bashing, can I assume you boys do not have red dots on your shotguns? Besides my Maverick, my 870, my AL391, my AYA #2 20ga., I picked up a tactical A300 recently and don't feel like I compromised. Besides the addition of an Esstac shotgun card and a sling, I don't feel a need for any other doo dads on it.

I don't see why shotguns cannot be sawed off to the nub. that would make for the best home defense ever. After all, shotgun patters all become sawed off anyway.

Never saw a need for a red dot on a shotgun. A low power scope for hunting with slugs maybe but I only hunt birds with shotgun, with an O/U Browning. I did put ghost ring sights on my 870 and did fine on a man silhouette target at 50 and 100 yds with slugs. And a weapon light was a must for me.

This is right next to my recliner. For those occasions when there are home invasions while Mrs Greener and I are watching Yellowstone. Or if something goes bump in the night.
And here it is incognito

Red Dots on shotgun OF COURSE! Ive been running Trijicon RMRs and Holosuns. I find them really good on the Tac-14s

I which someone would make a Circle reticle with various size circles so you could pick a size to match your shot pattern at "X" range....

The BIG question is what size shot do you use for self/home defense? (sneak peak--Im not a it has to be 00 guy. I like #2 Buck and the Winchester Defender Buck& Ball 3 rounds of 00 and a round ball)

Nothing wrong with short barrels. Ive got a SxS "pistol" with 9 inches and another with 6. My stocked SBR(S)'s run from 10 to 14 inches

Agree. I have a Bull X Pro on top mine, 24MOA circle.
I use Federal Flite Control but I’ve yet to shoot outdoors to really test/stretch the pattern.
Indoor range only allows slugs, I can neither confirm nor deny I may have “accidentally” put one or two down range at a 13 yard target. A300 Ultima Patrol was optimized for this shell.

I like #4 buck in Federal Flite Control rounds. Patterning holds together nicely out to 50 yards, although I think #4 does best out to 25 yards.

Shotty loads are one of the biggest troll topics ever LOL. It's like underwear it's THAT personal.. I use progressive loads myself being in a split bedroom apartment. My first rounds a 3" #6, next is 2 3" 00 bucks, then there's 3 3" winchester pdx defenders. I really really think the first round to the face at about 10 feets gonna stop any aggression but if not we can go thru the tube LOL /shrug. I just have a standard 870 clone but I'd like to get an a300 or a nice pump with a dot on it. It would be strictly for defense and range fun.

Louis Awerbuck used to spend some time in his shotgun classes exploring the use of different loads in the shotgun. He would setup one paper target (for slugs) and a steel target (for shot) then put you through scenarios.

Even with only two targets and only two loads, he could get the most squared-away student confused in no time. A little more effort had people flailing.

This was in a class, on a nice summer day, when you mostly knew what's about to happen.

I'm pretty sure nobody came out of those classes with a very complicated shotgun ammo plan. Buckshot and maybe a handful of slugs (or vice-versa) is as exotic as I get.

OK, why 3"?

I'm not lookin to kill my neighbors or my mother. Like I said troll topic. It's always situational and personal preference. I've also run frangibles in my ar and pistols at home at times. My home ar defense ammo is either frangable or pdx.
