The 25 Creedmoor: Long-Range Goldilocks

With better wind drift than the 6mm or 6.5 Creedmoor's—and less recoil than the latter—the new .25 delivers at long range.

The .25 Creedmoor splits the difference between the 6.5 and 6mm cartridges. It produces slightly less recoil than a comparable 6.5 but with longer barrel life than most 6mms. Perhaps most importantly, it has superior wind drift characteristics when compared to either the 6.5 or 6mm cartridges in its class.

America’s history with .257 cartridges is almost exclusively tied to hunting. Hornady’s .25 Creedmoor Precision Hunter load pushes a 128-grain ELD-X at 2,850 fps, giving it excellent drop and wind drift characteristics beyond traditional hunting distances with minimal recoil. With traditional-weight hunting bullets such as the 117-grain InterLock, the .25 Creedmoor bests the .25-06 in terms of velocity.

The new .25 Creedmoor (c.) couldn’t be more different than the 1920s-era .257 Roberts (l.) or 1969’s .25-06 Rem. The Creedmoor takes advantage of modern case design that allows it to shoot high-BC bullets—making it a great low-recoil, high-performance option. (Photo courtesy of Keith Wood)

The New Howa 25 Creedmoor's known as the Triple Threat due to its fitting the niche for varmint hunting, Deer Hunting and for Target / Precision Shooting. Hornady has answered the call of others who were competing with the 25 Creedmoor in a wildcat form. With its 1:7.5 twist , it will handle very aerodynamic bullets and shoot right with the 6.5 Creedmoor at distance. However, the real appeal of this cartridge calls back to the true forte of the quarter-bore cartridge, which is dual-purpose use on varmints and big game. It will shoot light bullets that the 6.5 Creedmoor cannot.

25 Creedmoor Ballistic Performances

Hornady 134 –grain ELD Match Factory Load 2,760 FPS 2,266 FT-LB

75 –grain Hornady V-Max Handload 3,519 FPS 2,062 FT-LB

102-grain Lehigh Defense Controlled Handload 3,100 FPS 2,176 FT-LB

110-grain Nosler AccuBond Handload 3,037 FPS 2,253 FT-LB

133-grain Berger Elite Hunter Handload 2,686 FPS 2,130 FT-LB

Howa now has the 25 Creedmoor available in their famous 1500 barreled actions in 22" Std and 24" Hvy options both of which are threaded with choices in a variety of stocks to choose from – Hogue, Walnut, Walnut DLX , Fenceline and APC Chassis, something for everyone!

i didn't go the way of a bolt action rather went with an AR instead..........................it'll be here in late june to mid july iirc.
The new Sierra 131gr offering is tempting.

I’m not trading in the 25-06 just yet.
i have the 131's on hand as this is my 1st 25cal. i wish there was a 7.5t available as there was nothing between the 7 and 8 to choose from, so i went with a 7t 26" +3gas.
If I was to get one of these, I think the 25 would be the better offer, saw where the 22 can burn the barrels out more then the 25 would, checked my local shops, nobody has either of these in stock at this time….
depending on powder used and whether you're shooting at max pressures then ya, the 22 version can be a barrel burner just like the 22-250 and 220swift. you could still get 1k rounds or more depending on how hot (temp wise) you use it. bwt i ordered a 22creed 18" 8t +2gas AR which was posted in "what did you........ 48 hour" thread

bullets i'll be trying out is
128edl-x
131smk
133elite hunter
134edl-m
135long range hybrid

and for fun some barnes 100tsx-bt
