I carry paper maps or print outs all the time hunting or travelling. Never know when no cell service. Which is a lot of times hunting/hiking.
If going to a new place, I’ll look at a map first and jot down a few notes.

You can add “read and write in cursive”.

Heck how many kids learned cursive script, they cant even sign their name or read the Constitution or Bill of Rights. Cursive is like hieroglyphics to them.

Being a man I’ve always relied on maps because I could never bring myself to stop and ask for directions.

I remember Army map courses, before GPS. Wow it could be tough doing it on your own, staying "tactical" and keeping a pace count. I learned a few tricks, like counting telephone poles

I delivered and picked up packages with Fed Ex back in the good old days of the 90s. We had just enough technology to get electronic notifications that I had 1 hour to pick “on call” packages while juggling scheduled deliveries and picks ups from the AF base all the way out to Rosewood , NC. Good times. I had to read a map and get moving quick.
With programmable phones now I can’t even remember my wife’s phone number.

When I was a cop our dispatch would always give a map reference with the call. Every car had an ADC map book. So the call would say "Domestic at 123 Baker St Map 28 D 10"

They have a reason to not teach cursive -- The Constitution is written in cursive -- get it now?

us to , every few years we BUY the GIANT easy read USA atlas thing from wally world it resides in the map pocket on back of seat
plus we have a few TEXAS maps....cause you just never know when road construction of a new road might be finished

I thought this was another Landnav discussion. I can't imagine someone not being able to read a road map.
Before I get beyond Landnav I do once again want to recommend these two books. Best books I ever read about Landnav.

I bought this at the Shoppette on Fort Lewis when I bought my first brand new car in 1992. It's been in my glove box since then.
I had a job working for a Carpet Cleaning company the first thing they told me to buy was one of these.
Agains, I can't imagine someone who can't read a road map. I mean the legend literally tells you how to read the map.
Before I get beyond Landnav I do once again want to recommend these two books. Best books I ever read about Landnav.

I've worked on fire lookouts for several years and can't count the number of times people have arrived at the lookout and asked what the name of the lookout was and what road to take to get back to civilization. They'd point to a prominent peak and ask if that was Mt Rainier, for example, which was to the south but they were pointing at Glacier Pk to the north.
