Got the call late yesterday that the HD 3.6 I ordered back in January (from Staccato - 10% discount) was ready for pick up at my LGS. So zipped down there an hour before closing and grabbed it. Apparently a lot of other folks got the call around same time I did!
I think I’ve mentioned before I had already ordered and received an IWB leather holster from TT Gunleather and my usual complement of magazines to speed up range time (from Staccato and Greg Cotes), along with the mounting kit for the Trijicon HD I already had.
Didn’t do much with it last night, but this morning decided I would clean it and head to the range to run 200 rounds through it before I mounted the optic (just to make sure gun was good). Took me about an hour to get it disassembled as the slide stop(s) seemed welded in
. So after about 10-15 minutes of unsuccessful attempts (using the push from inside method), I doused both sides slide stops with a good amount of shooter’s lube, then walked away while it sat. After about an hour, returned and got it in 2-3 tries, pushing from the inside.
This was a from the factory purchase/delivery and it seemed lubricated and ready to go (didn’t matter, I was going to clean it before firing anyway). Imagine my surprise when I got it disassembled and found this. No idea what that crap was, but took me about 20-30 minutes to get it all chipped off. Last thing I wanted was it chipping off inside the gun while I was shooting!
Rest of the cleaning was uneventful, so applied a reasonable amount of Shooter’s Lube, reassembled, and headed to the range.
First shot at 5 yds. Think I’m going to like this gun!
49 more at 5 yds, then 50 at 7 yds, all with irons (and ridiculously short sight radius
). Got sloppy here and there, but when I made sure I could clearly see front sight, could hit the 10 every time…or at least close to it!
100 more rounds to go, including 50 of my preferred carry ammo 124g HST. The first 150 (above and first round on 2nd target) were Winchester 124g NATO FMJ. I like to use that 1200 FPS NATO to loosen up a new gun.
So next up was…TACTICAL DUDE round 1. The usual 3, 5, 7, 15, 3 yard shots. As expected, the 15 yard did not go well
.
TACTICAL DUDE round 2 was with my carry ammo. Got a bit sloppy again, but was also going pretty quick. Short radius irons and my astigmatism are pretty unforgiving.
200 rounds total with zero issues. That was enough. Cleaned up my brass, headed home, then cleaned the gun again and mounted the RMR HD. Reassembled gun and will head back mid next week for same courses of fire to see difference between shooting with irons and using a dot (for me). Had a good time, as always.
