Ayoob: Was the 10mm Destined to Fail?

Id suggest the biggest negative to 10mm as a PD gun is the recoil. The FBI saw scores drop when switching from 357 to 10, making qualification difficult with "small statured agents" (read that as females)

Actually , IF the comparison was .357 Silvertip 145 from 3 inch K Frame vs M1076 w/ FBI spec 10mm , recoil would have. Been non issue . But alas , the standard issue load was .38 +P , and actual .357 was case by case supervisor approval , for specific operations.

At Least as much as recoil , the issues were with the Physical Size of the M1076 . Both hand size vs grip girth , and bulky enough to spoil the lines on their Brooks Brothers suits .

You may be right about the size of the gun; but Is suggest it was more about the size of some of their agents...

I doubt many FBI agents are wearing Brook Brothers but I get your point

Brooks Brothers was slightly tongue in cheek. But there was pushback about the concealability for casual clothes or off duty carry .

The FBI issue 10mm ammo of 180gr @ 950-ish fps was essentially the same as typical 180gr .40S&W duty loads , but the subsequent G22 was somewhat smaller , and much more ergonomic, with essentially similar recoil .
