Your very first loan...What was it for?

A POS used Mustang bought at one of those rip off used car dealerships that preyed on young service members. Right outside the main gate of the base, with a super high interest rate. The car didn't run or last very long. Lesson learned for a young private! lol
Much the same, 68 Mustang, high interest, just outside the gate, young service man, except mine run like a raped ape until it did cartwheels, rollovers, and sliding on the roof.

Yep. Vultures outside main gates. I bought car insurance through Dairyland at my first duty station. Wrecked my friends car with $400 damage. My agent told me that my insurance wouldn't cover it since it wasn't my car, but I knew otherwise. I wrote a letter to the state insurance commissioner and reported their denial. Less than a week later I get a call from the agent. "Please come over to the office to sign some paperwork." Yeah...they covered it, the schmucks.

Does buying a car at a Buy Here -Pay Here place count?

Either way it was a car.

I bought a 1970 Dodge Duster in New Port Richey Fla that fell apart on me shortly after I bought it. I never did pay off the loan on that one.

I bought a 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit at a Buy Here Pay Here place in Tacoma for $1,200.

And I got a loan on a 1991 Geo Storm that was still actually brand new on the lot in 1992.

So those are the first three things I bought on credit

Geo was a reliable car. I bought a new Hyundai accent for my daughter when they were $6K new. Never failed her until she totaled it on I-5 in Seattle. That little Ford Aspire was another inexpensive reliable car.

I bought a 1991 Geo Storm in September of 1991 which apparently was the 1992 model year. So since my car was a last year's model I got it for $9,000.

I think I put over 150,000 miles on it before someone rear ended my wife and totaled it in 1996.

The insurance pay out was $3,000.

I drove it from Fort Lewis to San Antonio. I drove it from San Antonio to Omaha. I drove it from Omaha to Colorado Springs and back several times. I drove from Colorado Springs to Castle Rock Washington at least once and I delivered pizzas in it for 2 years. The car held up to all that and according to the insurance company was still worth $3,000.

1984 s 10 4x4 blazer
omg 360 a month and i think about 13 percent interest
it blew a rear main seal just after 12k miles, we looked like the exxon valdez going to work
my father in law ran jville care dealer techs and he was at ford at the time and his buddy at the chevy place removed engine
and promptly dropped it on floor

w got a new complete engine free from GM, cost me the oil and anti freeze

I bought a new 1984 or 1985 Blazer Silverado. Had it ordered from the factory. $17K. A fortune back then. One of the lemons in my life.

On a side note on loans, back in the early ‘80s, the home mortgage interest rate climate was far away from what we have now.
We complain about 6-8% now.

Back in early 80’s it was 13-16%.
“A” credit got you around 13%.
Ouch !!!
3-5% a few yrs ago is nothing compared to that.
Agreed. My first mortgage was 11% and I thought that was a great deal!

i think it was around 13 or 14k other than the engine bit, it was a pretty decent ride.

our 1st mortgage in 92 was 11 or something
2 years later it dropped to 7 we re-did the loan, payment dropped off and term was half
rolled equity into balance
sold it in 04 for 2x what we paid for it.. but new house was OMG you spent how much :ROFLMAO: sold it 11 months later for again 2x the purchase...not sure how or why, just happy and we took it

i avoid loans at all possible cost except for cattle.............doing a chattel loan works great when the loan officer isn't a richard-head. 30% is all they needed from me and they took care of the 70%. most of the time i had turn arounds from 6-9 months while buying every month or 2 to ride the waves/fluctuations in prices. 1 load moron told me there was no limit as long as i had the 30%..............well i just got in a $50k truck load to inform him and pay my part..............he decided he wouldn't go by his handshake deal. good thing i had the money. the pos isn't a banker any more, but the da still lives here..............i DON"T talk to him and care not to! went over his head to the pres of the bank, but he stood by the loan officer's decision 🤬 🤬 🤬 🤬 . i don't do loans on vehicles or farm equipment or even a house................if i don't have the money, i'll wait until i do..................not everyone can do that, but i'll keep doing it as long as possible.

I like watching the cattle drives here. If they're in the highway, best just park the vehicle and take a nap. They have the right of way...open range. Cowboys, cowgirls, horses, motorcycles and 4-wheelers, all herding cows and their calves to the lower pastures just the other day. Out-of-towners get pissed when held up in traffic. I feel fortunate to experience the sight. Refreshingly unwoke.

we did that plenty of times back in my youth, but only a couple of miles worth (4 at most). we'd use our trucks and trailers as a fence line across the road with police help to ensure traffic safety. county and state would help out cause the cattle my parents and grandparents had were wild, but could produce some good calves. many were striped like tigers due to the cross breeding and were as mean. i give all my athletic skills i acquired to them.............they made me what i am and there was never enough fence between them and i when sepparating the mom's from the calves.
