Detecting a Tail and What to Do Next

Did you ever have that feeling that you were being followed? I’m sure almost everyone has at one point in their lives. Being followed, either by car or on foot, is a very scary experience. Questions begin to swirl in your head: Why me? What do they want? Is this really happening? Here, we’ll sort out between rational thinking and unnecessary panicking if you think you’re being followed, and what to do if you determine that you have a tail.

What to Do if You’re Being Followed

What to Do if You’re Being Followed

I've given similar advice to my wife because of her job. She sometimes has to deal with some real kooks.

Slightly off topic, one should never get bumper-to-bumper with the vehicle ahead of you when stopped. Always allow one half vehicle length ahead, in case you want/need to drive away. You'll thank me one day. . .

My rule of thumb on that is, if you can see the bottom of the rear tires in front of you you have enough space to turn enough to get around the car in front of you.

Way to vague of a question.

Where are you?
Are you armed?
Why are you a target?
Is help or 911 an option?
Are you alone (Kids)?
Are you willing to use overwhelming lethal force?

On foot, if possible, Im a fan of releasing a fog of pepper spray behind you. That will discourage all but the most dedicated. In a proper vehicle, (not a motorized skateboard), Im not opposed to ramming. A large trailer hitch makes a good impact tool

Personally Im a fan of a M203; but thats a whole different thread

But maybe the best is just calling 911 and saying you see a man with a gun threatening people....

If you feel the need to call the police at all, why not tell them the truth?
If youve decided that youre being followed, is there any doubt that he is threatening AND has a gun?

Saying youre being followed will get you a 30 minute response. Saying you think you saw a gun will get a response in minutes.

I guess you have to decide how scared you are and how bad you need help

Absolutely not. Poor advice. Sorry. . .
Sorry friend we disagree BUT again you have to decide how scared you are and how long you can wait.

"Im being followed" is a routine dispatch call. Depending how busy the PD is it could take 2 hours to see a cop

"Im being followed and I think he has a gun and Im scared" gets you put near the top of the dispatch list with a fast response time. You can always apologize if it turns out to be a cellphone but you have to be alive and free to apologize

As a former LEO, I was fed too many BS lies, and I'll not lay any on my current brethren, especially just so my call may move up the queue. For me, fear has never played a role in my decisions to be truthful.
I was lied to all the time too BUT is the only way to get acknowledgment in this kind of a case. If youre NOT afraid then why are you concerned about being followed? Whats the point of this whole thread? Do you really think the follower is there because he thinks you look like a high school friend? If hes not armed with a gun, is he armed with 100 pounds of muscle?

As a cop I would have soon had a "I think he has a gun" call than having to respond to search the area 2 hours later OR a "My wife never came home" an hour before shift ends

Is it BS? If it is then maybe you werent being followed and THATs the BS. Only YOU can say how frightened you are AND how long you can wait. Tell 911 that you think you are being followed and its a two hour wait on a busy night. If youre really being followed cant YOU wait?

What am I doing in life that somebody has decided to follow me?

I mean, I'm 60 years old and it hasn't happened yet.

It really doesn't matter what I tell the police, they're not going to get there in time to prevent whatever the person who's following me (assuming that he is following me) intends to do.

Lying to the police isn't going to do anything to help me and it might hurt me.

I find it rather odd that somebody who has alluded to being a cop more than once would suggest doing something so blatantly illegal.

Because they'll take their time or not come at all. And likely, they do have a gun. And a warrant.

I've said this before but the cops don't prevent crime.

They show up after it's all over to gather evidence and take reports.

You might want to look up Castle Rock V Gonzalez.

The estranged husband of Jessica Gonzalez took their three children and drove them around for several hours before driving into the parking lot of the Castle Rock Colorado Police Department and killing them before the cops could stop him.

Me lying to the cops isn't going to change the final outcome and it might get me in trouble.

there's plenty of reasonable doubt that he has a gun.
Is there? Really? AND you are "making the report" until the officer arrives.

AGAIN if this guy is really following you, whats the chances hes doing it for platonic reasons? YOURE either scared or youre NOT. If youre not dont call the police and why have this thread BUT if you ARE scared then be hysteric to 911 and apologize later

I guess this is another LOCATION thing Are you more worried about telling 911 you thought he was armed and threatening OR the guy thats actually following you

BUT how'bout if we substitute someones daughter as the one being followed, would you really suggest she wait for a routine call to be dispatched?
