I know that I am an infinitely small sample size, but I have never needed a forward assist on any of my semi-auto 5.56 rifles. I kinda like the replica...
The one I shot in basic back in 1967 didn't have a forward assist. I have heard that people that hunt with AR sometimes use it. Trying to quietly chamber a round, they ease the charging handle forward and then hit the FA to make sure the bolt seats all the way.
