Mob Defense: How to Stay Safe from a Crowd

Staying safe in a crowd is much different than staying safe from a crowd.

Imagine yourself alone or with your family or a small group where you suddenly and without warning find yourself in a situation where a mob of irritated humans (perhaps “peaceful protesters”) start forming up around you and appear hostile. What are some recommended courses of action you can take on foot, at home or in a vehicle to reduce risk, break contact and get to safety?

Mob defense isn’t about fighting crowds—it’s about creating space, time and options. Your goal is not to fight or prove a point—it’s to survive, protect those you love and reach safety intact. The original, triggering issue is no longer immediately important or resolvable.

Mob defense is, at its core, risk management under stress: maintaining lawful behavior, minimizing exposure and preserving freedom of movement.

Every measure—planning routes, reading crowd energy, de-escalating with posture and tone, hardening your home or rehearsing exit drills—builds a margin of safety that compounds. Should that moment arrive, you’ll rely not on luck, but on preparation, discipline and composure to carry you, and those with you, through it alive and with the lowest scale of injury.

I think a lot of people the first mistake that they make is they see the situation developing and they tell themselves what I'm seeing happening is not really happening.

The best way to keep yourself safe in a crowd is to get the hell outof and Away from the crowd.

That said, I'm all about avoiding crowds

You can download a scanner app on your phone, the problem is that most police departments nowadays the radio traffic is encrypted

I didnt get a "read" on what youre asking? Are they mad at you? Or something else and you just happened to be there?

Im going to assume the "just happened to be there". IF thats the case and if the crowd is moving; let them move past. NOTE Im not saying "just" let them move, as if its that simple; but let them move as you move slower until they out distance you.

Alternatively, seek shelter inside a store, hopefully not a store that seems to be the target of the mob. If possible seek a back door to exit away from the mob.

I carry (I know its me) both a regular can of pepper spray (Fog type) which can be discreetly deployed as you slowly move away and sometimes a Pepper Grenade. The idea being to create a buffer around you being cautious of the wind. Again because its me depending where Im going I may have a Pepper Grenade. Its regular pepper spray but once the tab is depressed, it locks in the OPEN position and empties the entire can, so it can be thrown or dropped. Again to create a space.

If YOU are the target, the only response I can suggest would be to go Full Berserker with guns, knives, fits and teeth. Youll loose but think of the story, as they find you with a slide locked back, broken knife blade and an ear in your mouth that you bit off one of the attackers.... (sarcasm--mostly)

When confronted by a crowd of people. There will be clear instigators for the crowd. Identity them, target them if needed and most follow alongs will usually disappear quickly. Most crowds are 80% Lookie Lou's

Alas 21st Century U.S. isn't 1980's Rhodesia or South Africa . Or Israel at anytime in history up until present.

Just ask Rittenhouse about shooting your way out of a riot .

The old cliche about the best way to be safe in a violent mob situation, is to Not Be There . But alas , nowadays, the Blamtifa SOP is sudden pop up takeovers of usually non dangerous areas . Once you are inadvertently cought up in one , there are no Good Options, just different flavors of bad and worse .

Were you not paying attention, Rittenhouse set the stage for anyone needing to shoot their way to safety? (Ask The View, they learned). He was a kid that went there planning for trouble and he could run. Now factor in being older, medically challenged, or with your kids. Be afraid if you want, or maybe learn how to articulate your fears, beyond "I was afraid..."

I apologize if that sounds harsh. It wasnt meant for anyone specifically just the fear mentality of OMG what "will" happen if I use my gun.

Rabbit hole fantasies, Zombies, just learn a few secret code phrases, understand the lingo the nut jobs use, always pack the right colored scarf or bandana that shows you belong, make sure you have a hat with the right slogan, keep a flag pole in your vehicle with some choice banners, just learn to pass yourself off as one more in the crowd, be one of them until you have an opportunity to retreat safely back to sanity, and keep you powder dry.

In early 2020 the Colorado Springs Police Department shot a suspect fleeing from police

The suspect was Found To Be Armed[/I] and he was out on bond I don't remember what the exact charge was but essentially he was accused of committing sexual abuse on a child.

They held rallies and protests and blocked roads all over Colorado Springs in honor of this Paragon of the community.

They vilified the police for daring to shoot a fleeing suspect who had a gun.

At one point in August of 2020 there was a roadblock protest outside the house of one of the police officers who was involved in the shooting.

Correction in Bold

The "mostly peaceful protesters" were armed.

What do you do when the protest is happening in your driveway?

If you get caught in the middle of something like this there's really a whole lot you can do. Keep the lowest possible profile, try to get out of the area.

Have a plan and execute it as soon as possible.

In 2020 or so about the same time as they protested outside of the cop's house a bunch of protesters blocked Interstate 25. They just ran out of the highway and stopped traffic. The place where they did it was a divided highway with a grass median. If you're in a situation like that and you can you drive across the median and get into, in this case it would have been the southbound Lanes.

I haven't been to eat in a restaurant in 4 years but when we did go to restaurants we sat as far away from the front door and it's close to the emergency exit as we could get.

Commotion in the front, walk out the back door.

If you know there's a protest coming stay home if at all possible.

They had no Kings Day in downtown Colorado Springs they essentially took over the center of downtown. We didn't go anywhere near it because they announced it on the news tonight before.

I mean, to be honest we didn't go near it because we're old and we don't have life and we weren't going downtown anyway but the principal remains

How'd that work out for those two?

You, being somewhat familiar with Colorado Springs might be interested to know that this actually happens at the intersection of Austin Bluffs and Nevada where Austin Bluffs becomes Garden of the Gods
The picture is just a joke. The last time I was in Colorado Springs was 1988, as I was driving out of it after ETSing out of the Army. The street or avenue Nevada is still in my memory, but I don't recall Austin Bluffs. I had planned to visit just as COVID hit, but that messed up a lot of travel plans. I have no idea of when or if I might travel back.
