Is there really that much difference

Almost every criminal encounter that I've ever had has occurred in a transitional space.

Almost every encounter that I've had with a beggar has either occurred in a Walmart parking lot or a gas station parking lot.

This example is a little different, because I don't know if it was location dependent or or because I was wearing a Security Uniform. I've had people see me in a gas station in uniform either gassing up or getting a gas receipt and go absolutely ballistic on me because I was a Security Guard. Would they have done that if I were standing behind the fence at a utilities site?

There were two times in my "career" that I was assigned to work in a parking garage which is definitely a transitional space. I don't remember anybody going ballistic on me there just because I was wearing a security guard uniform.

So, bottom line, most of the bad experiences with homeless people or people that I think were setting me up to mug me or steal my gun occurred in either a gas station parking lot or Walmart parking lot. Third place goes to the parking lot of the apartments I used to live in.

So when I have to go to any of those places I'm a little bit more on edge I'm actively looking around my surroundings and I try to get in and out as fast as I can and I do things that tend to have worked in the past. I get gas at the outside Island at the pump closest to the edge of the parking lot because it has the best view of my surroundings.

I try really hard not to go to busy gas stations. Unfortunately the one on the way out of town is busier than most.

Anyway I do those things because I have seen them lessen my exposure risk over time.

You do you.

Both , seriously .

Different dynamic.

While a parking facility inherently has characteristics of a Transition Zone , * You * weren't transitioning. You were there for a shift / patrol .

Uniformed presence , will have two opposing effects . Small percentage, buy greater than zero , attract the wrath of malfafactors with overriding irrational issues with authority figures .

Most of the time , somewhat rational BG s , would move on to Plan B target area without a visible uniformed presence .

I always carry one extra mag no matter what I carry but usually an extra mag off body in the car. As the caliber goes up in size I have no problem with reduced capacity. I am one of those old dinosaurs that believe (in my experience shooting large animals) caliber matters.

I keep going back and forth 9mm capacity VS 45 big bore. Ultimately I think both are winners and both have flaws. Each day I carry what calls my name when I get dressed. I will admit to carrying a Seecamp of PPK when formal attire is required and the threat is LOW

Between the 9mm and .45 I prefer the 9mm for general carry, most of my carry guns are now 9mm, but when it gets cold and heavy clothes are being worn, I prefer a lager caliber like a .40 or preferably the .45. All of my carry caliber ammo is heavy for caliber HSTs.

So yes, bullets have changed (better Hollow Point performance); but I think the REAL difference is EMS response time and ER medicine that keeps bad guys alive.

Its funny how when good guys shoot a bad guy they call for a medic and even provide 1st aid (after dancing around the body); but bad guys dont call 911 for their victims

...heck nowadays they what the good guy to give back the ear they took form the bad guy as a trophy. Whats this world coming to?
We always warned the entry team, "remember, if you have to shoot, you're not allowed to gut 'em"

I've used my pistol in self defense and only had to fire 1 time to stop the threat with my 9mm and my attacker didn't survive and I'm pretty sure I was the last thing he saw despite the news announcing his death ~4 hours later in the hospital. Caliber doesn't matter at all IMO after these experiences. Shot placement and having the gun at hand mattered way way more than anything else. Things go south in a split second and ever since I've been a "carry 24/7" type.

Are you now carrying a pistol in .22 long rifle now 🤔 ? If caliber doesn’t matter that would be your best choice, no recoil and high capacity.

I carry 9mm and .380acp. While .22lr is taking what I said to a bit of an extreme, I do think a gun in .22lr is better than no gun at all and can still be quite lethal with proper shot placement. Make the discussion about .22magnum or 5.7mm and I'd have 0 reservations with those in the proper firearm.

If you hit someone center mass with a .22lr, the "Fudge, I've been shot" factor is HUGE. Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face and even less people have a plan when they get shot in the chest.

CZ 97b 10 + 1 and 2 spare 10 rounders in a Bianchi Shoulder Holster for most of the Winter months and a 9 MM CZ Shadow 2 Carry the rest of the year in a OWB. a Spare fifteen round on a pouch on the belt also. I just bought a CZ P-10-F in .45 that's a 13 shot which adds to the choices.

Gosh, I really like that Shadow 2. When I finally decide to buy myself something nice that isn't striker fired, the Shadow is near the top of my list.
It's the most I ever spent on a firearm and my Son bought me the optic sight for Christmas. I am VERY happy with this gun.
