While a multitude of law enforcement agents sprang into action after a shooter tried to storm a ballroom where President Donald Trump and others were attending the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one well-dressed and cool under pressure plainclothes agent went viral after whipping out a Heckler & Koch MP7.

The MP7 is a high-end personal defense weapon (PDW) that is already something of a pop culture fascination, being famously used by SEAL Team Six and featured in countless video games. Unlike many of its counterparts, it also remains unavailable in any configuration on the general firearms civilian marketplace.

BUT.....

HK Gives us the SP7 – Maybe American shooters have wanted a civilian-legal MP7 for years. HK has said no for just as long. Something may have finally changed.

There have been plenty of reasons, such as Germany’s complex export laws. However, according to Rifleconfiguration.com in September 2025, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs stated the SP7 and PCC7 were not weapons of war and could be exported.

Is the SP7 On Its Way?

In my young agent days on protection operations the artillery was the Uzi and a folding stock 870. The Uzi poured out a lot of lead in a hurry but good luck hitting anything past 7 yards. Then we got the MP5 that was a whole new level of accuracy for a PDW. I always thought the best usefulness of those weapons was to break an ambush or secure a perimeter. The reality is, in close protection incidents it is rare that the detail would have time to employ weapons and would go hands on the attacker instead. First priority is to cover the principal and una$$ the area. I have not had an MP7 in my hands but have to believe HK held the standards up for reliability and accuracy.

I dont know what your hate is all about. The MP7 is a GREAT gun and 4.6 does exactly what it was designed to do. The gun is small and light enough to conceal carry. The Uzi and Mp5 not so much (but do-able in an old world sense). You guys can say its ugly but that sounds like the guys saying the same thing about the M16 when we carried FALs or M14s. I would love to have a REAL MP7 if I was on a Personal Protection Assignment. Maybe you dont understand to concept of the PDW???

I carried both the UZi and MP5 on security details. I found them accurate beyond 50meters if the shooter did his part. On the flip side the M10 (Mac 10) was best inside a phone booth if friendlies were in the mix.

I remember the UZI craze after the attempt on Regan.
The SS agents had Uzis that were shown on the photos.

I bet I could have sold a 1000 in the 6 months afterward, but the distributor that owned the shop I ran didn't carry them.
Over 30,000 were imported into US in early 80’s.
Initial into market was 1980 and the Reagan incident bolsted sales thru the roof !
