I have always been drawn to this concept. The Steyr shoots great and fits me well...but it is so homely. I know, I know. I am shallow. The Ruger does not make Coopers weight, but hits the other boxes and I find it attractive. My hunting days are mostly behind me know, excepting birds of course, so I don't have one. But if a fella was going to have two rifles, one semi auto and one bolt, I think the Ruger Scout would be an excellent choice. Or a Springfield Armory M-14. I love those things. But sadly don't own one.

Back in the day I had a gunsmith assemble a Cooper Scout on a small ring Mauser action in 308 Win with a mid placement scope rail and used a Burris extended eye length scope in I think 2.5x with a heavy post reticle. I never found a suitable stock so it went bipod-less. but took a lot of game. Like so many other projects I sold it to a buddy who had to have it.

I always wanted a Steyr in 376 caliber of Afrika

The .308 is a great cartridge. Everything that needs to be done in North America can be done with the .308. Heck Teddy Roosevelt did everything in North America worth doing with a 30-06 with crap bullets. With modern powders and bullets the .308 is the logical choice for a one rifle man.
