When I was stationed at Malmstrom AFH in Great Falls in the early 90’s it seems there were one or two people on average killed a year and several other seriously injured at Glacier alone.

I don’t know the specifics here and a few have probably been uncanny luck, but the majority of those killed were trying to get to close to the bears.

Well, I don’t think we will ever know what happened in this case, except the human didn’t survive the encounter.

Maybe the bear was surprised and charged, who knows.

Back in 2013 I was hiking in Grand Teton National Park and encountered mama grizzly and her 2 almost adult cubs. I stopped in my tracks to see which direction they were headed. Fortunately, they were slowly moving away from me. You can bet I was very bear aware for the rest of the hike. I did have bear spray with me.
