How close are we to Light Sabers?

OK mostly a joke...mostly. I keep seeing laser technology improving and stuff available for civilians getting better. Ive used Vis and IR lasers on personal guns for over 10 years and since the 80s for military ranging and targeting. I remember the first civilian weapons laser was about the size of a carton of cigarettes, then the size of a 3 D cell mag lite. Now I see handheld Lasers that will ignite a match and Im wondering....

The FDA controls lasers for civilians and limits the power; but even so they can be (are) unsafe for shining directly into someone's eye. We see "industrial" Lasers cutting steel, so Im wondering how long before a handheld laser can cut off body parts in a single swipe or pierce through body armor???

Cuz I kinda want one. Who else?

o_O  Kind of a scary thought considering how careless some (many?) are about controlling the direction of the muzzle of their firearm. I've been "flagged" way, way too many times in my life. If it'd been a light saber I'd have long ago required the additional technology of devices to regenerate appendages, or resurrect me and THEN reconstruct my body.

Interesting history:

i'm still wondering when we will actually get flying cars.....

as it is now, people cannot drive safely, and accidents happen around the clock.

can you imagine the drunks and drugged out people flying above us...???

Well I’d trade a laser for a 25th Century Disintegrator gun like the one Buck Roger’s carried. After all it was automatic and all one had to do was pull the energy release lever to zap your adversary into oblivion. And in 1935 this only set you back 50 cents or 89 cents for the Combat Set. Probably cost the gov’t a million and change for a unit today! Be sure to zoom in and read Dr. Huer’s explanation on how it works. Remember these are banned in New Jersey!

Yeah, we were promised those flying cars for 2000, what the heck happened. We’ve been robbed😳. ‘Course the same magazines telling us this stuff were also talking about the coming ice age and Europe and a lot of North America being under glaciers (maybe the reason we’d need flying cars?).

“May the Fourth be with you!”
It’s the perfect day to ask one of the coolest sci-fi questions ever:
Could lightsabers be real one day?

The glowing blade. The buzzing sound. The epic battles. Lightsabers are the ultimate weapon in the Star Wars galaxy. But could we build something similar here on Earth? Let’s explore the science!

Can We Make a Blade of Light?
What About Plasma?
What Exists Today?

I remember reading a couple of years back that light sabers, as depicted in Star Wars, didn't appear possible given our current understanding of how light works. We could, conceivably, discover that our knowledge was incomplete. Wouldn't be the first time that has happened. It was once thought to be impossible to fly beyond the speed of sound.

"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid".

I keep looking at those lasers that claim they can ignite a match and I sorta want one to mount on a rifle forearm. Im imagining setting a bad guy on fire by lighting his shirt OR maybe better his pants at the crotch (since hes not likely to see the beam there). Or maybe making his disposable lighter blow up in his pocket. I wonder if it would detonate bullets in a magazine?

It could be a new class of PD weapons, LLME (Less Lethal/More Exciting) "give him a burst of the Lemme"

Just think if we hit'em in the crotch we might slow down the welfare birth rates...

I guess it's time to chime in on this.

What's needed is a force field (Star Trek)that strong enough to form an invisible cylinder and end cap (length) of the contained plasma but not strong enough to prevent the plasma doing it's thing when striking a solid object.

It should all be explained in Star Wars 26 - Revenge of the Pokemon Sith

The flying cars were ALMOST perfected. Then the green mandate thing came along and they had to start all over. 😁
