Range Report: More .45 Practice w/Distance, 5/26/26

How in the world is everybody today?

Today I took 150 rounds of .45ACP with me to put through the Sig 1911X, Garrison, and XD45 Tactical, all 5" barrels. I shot a few targets at 10 yards but mostly at 15 and even one at 25 yards, using 10-shot strings. I plan to work more at these longer distances. I need the practice. Last week I did OK shooting 12" steel at 50 yards but I'd like to get my hits more centered and in a tighter group. Wish me luck. ;)

It was a lovely, warm, late spring day, almost 90° today. Everything is green and alive.

The range was almost empty when I arrived. I had visions of running a cold 10-10-10 drill. But I had to sign an updated waiver, check a bunch of boxes, answer a lot of 4473-type questions, etc. By the time I was done it was too busy for me to use my timer. But I managed to get my favorite lane, #5.

These are the stars of the show today. I used all the 7, 8, and 10 round magazines in both 1911 pistols with no problems. The XD45 behaved itself very well too. I really like the LAX/Freedom Munitions ammo. Their .45 and .223/.556 are priced very competitively, especially when you order during one of their "free shipping" deals.

I started with the Sig 1911X at 10 yards. The first target came back like this.

If you consider who's shooting, that's not too bad for a cold target. I sent the next three targets out to 15 yards. Perhaps I should've slowed down a little.

I had fun ringing 12" steel last week but I guess a target like that doesn't lend itself to pinpoint accuracy. While these hits would've rung steel, maybe stopped a bad guy, they wouldn't win any contest. I'm going to press on and send the next target out to 25 yards and see what I can do with this Sig 1911X.

I took a little more time with this one. You can see the fairly tight group of 8 hits. I hope to get all this more centered as I work at distance and keep a proper grip. Next I ran the 5x3 scenario at 7 yards. (Target turns toward you 5 times for three seconds. I put two hits each turn, from low-ready.) I'll have video of all the pistols on this drill near the end of this write-up. This was the Sig target.

Yeah, I threw one way out. That was the 9th round. I was doing so well. :p Next up is the XD45 Tactical, first target at 10 yards.

Drat, another flyer. One of these days. The next two targets were at 15 yards again. If I take a little time with this long, spongy trigger with a break like a wet noodle, I can do pretty not-too-bad, eh?

I believe with a little more practice I can tighten up and center that 10-shot string. Next is the 5X3 scenario target. I guess this is minute-of-bad-guy OK.

Like I said, I'll have video later. Let's finish up with the Garrison. Here's the first Garrison target at 10 yards.

Then I shot a few Garrison targets at 15 yards.

Hmm, at least my mediocrity is consistent. This last 15 yard target has only 5 hits on it because I'm saving 5 hits for the raffle target.

Yeah, I'm really embarrassed about that low/left flyer. Yes, I'll fix it, eventually. ;) Here's the 5.3 scenario target shot with the Garrison. There's no low/left here. :p

Here's the video of my three 5x3 scenarios. First Sig 1911X, then the XD45, followed by the Garrison. Mags were loaded as the target was traveling to distance, pairs were shot from low-ready.

I had saved five rounds to shoot another raffle target. This month they are giving away a Sig 211 GTO with Romeo-X optic. I made all my hits and got two entries for the price of one.

Wish me luck! I guess I've been pretty lucky in that I've actually won a gun raffle twice in my life. There's no rule saying I can't win a third time, right? Anyway, it's time to head home along with all the commuters. I can't call this a "rush hour" because it seems pretty tame compared to the Southern California traffic I'm used to. I call this a "rush minute".

That was my range day. I appreciate all of you stopping by for a visit. I'm going to take these three pistols out again at least twice before moving on to another in my little collection. Hopefully I can improve my skills with my .45s. I'll have a new Echelon coming on board soon and there are other 9mm that I haven't practiced with for a while. What's the saying? Too many guns, too little time. :D Blessings to all.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi,

Good shooting and great commentary as usual @BassCliff. Thanks for the share!

Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I tend to bloviate and use up a lot of bandwidth just to show off my mediocrity. :p

Maybe if I keep practicing, someday I can post "great shooting and good commentary". :ROFLMAO:

I just like hanging with all you guys. You'rea good lot.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I always shoot swinging steel plates at 10, 15 and 25 yards here on my range by the barn, and the folks I’ve taught are taught at 10 yards + as well. If you can hit at longer ranges then shorter range is easy. The only time I shoot at closer range is at 5 yards-that’s on paper targets shooting from the hip. For up close & personal that’s a skill that may be needed- and it takes a while to get it right. Still, it’s a fun exercise and just might come in handy some day. This is all with handguns. I don’t understand folks doing rifle drills at 25 or less-at those ranges if I use a long gun it’ll be a 1301 12 gauge that has a lot more thump than ANY “defensive” rifle you’ll find. Rifles are for stuff way beyond shotgun range-and for SD I have a difficult time seeing a situation where there will be a need to engage at 50 yards or more. Do whatever gives ya warm and fuzzies, but know your pistol, know how to use it, and CARRY the darn thing.
