Kuna Optics Experiences After Almost a Year?

Lab4Us

I’ve had my Kuna since February of this year and have had the AEMS on it since I got it (photo below). I was doing some rearranging today and noticed how much higher the AEMS optic sits than other optics I have on guns with rails (except the EOTECH on my Hellion).

Now that folks have been using their Kunas for a year plus, I’m curious if anyone might have found a lower profile optic they like on it to make it a bit less “tall”.

Forgot photo of current optic on my Kuna…

I've got 15 mags and two have cracked near the feed lips. What about you?
The first two i got with the gun cracked, SA sent me two more under warranty and they cracked. i have not wasted money on any more. i bought a SA st.Victor pistol that uses Colt SMG mags. problem solved.

I almost wish I'd just spent the money on the nexus lower and gone scorpion mags but so far I've been doing *OK*. I really like the SA St. Victor as well. If I had more money I'd probably have one of those and an Echelon right now. I've just been fascinated with 9mm as of late lol.

Not that any of them should crack, but were these first generation magazines? I got two with the gun and bought three more from Springfield (something about a nice even 150 rounds preloaded upon range arrival), but all were second generation, supposedly after the cracked magazines issue was fixed. I’ve only got 90 rounds through each, but haven’t had any issues yet. I am curious to know if anyone has had any second generation Kuna magazine crack.

As an aside, every time I come across that Saint Victor AR-15 Pistol in .300 Blk online somewhere, it takes just about every ounce of willpower I have not to click “Add to Cart”!

I'm not sure how to tell them apart but I got 2 with the gun, then I ordered ~5 and a few weeks later another ~8 or something like that. I need to count exactly how many I have again but it's right around ~15. They all look the same from what I can tell.

I want that ST. Victor muzzle device for my Kuna. My kuna lives under my jacket or tucked into the footwell of my passenger seat. I like the idea of directing all the gasses away from me and not sideways. Right now, I've got the HB Industries short stroke buffer, a nexus non-folding charging handle, b5 systems grips, HBI reduced safety spring and HBI aluminum picatinny rear cap. I intend to delete the right side safety selector as well when HBI comes back in stock with the delete kit.

my first two came apart, the two they replaced cracked and i haven't shot them anymore. don't know if they would come apart or not. i had planned to SBR it but not now.

Can we see a pic of your Kuna with the AEMS?

Remove brace, add sling, shoot SAS style like a boss. I'd SBR a .300 blk but not a 9mm. My Kuna without brace is like 16 inches from tip to tail. It's so compact.

Here’s what I got when I queried about SA Kuna Magazine issues…tried to find, unsuccessfully, the source(s). Did come across a FB post stating SA is on 3rd generation Kuna magazines now.

“AI Overview

Springfield quietly updated the Kuna magazines to address cracking and feeding issues. You can identify the newer versions by looking for longer springs, larger followers, and a distinct "U" marking near the rear of the magazine. [1, 2, 3]
Several key differences help identify the updated magazines:
  • The Follower: The newer magazines use a larger, redesigned polymer follower (the piece the bullets sit on) that is noticeably longer and less likely to tilt.
  • The Spring: The updated springs are stiffer and visibly longer.
  • The "U" Marking: Many users report spotting a "big U" mark on the newer-style magazines.
  • Capacity Change: Because of the longer spring and larger follower, many newer magazines hold 30 rounds instead of the original 31.
  • Packaging (if you have the box): The updated packaging features more compact lettering and more white space above and below the text on the label. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
A note on durability:
Even with the updated designs, the translucent polymer used for Kuna magazines is highly sensitive to certain harsh firearm cleaning solvents, which can cause them to become brittle and crack. To extend their lifespan, clean them carefully and consider loading your magazines on an open bolt to avoid the excess stress of seating a fully loaded mag against a closed bolt. []
If you find you have the older style and they are cracking, contact Springfield Armory for a warranty replacement. You can also purchase the updated versions from retailers like The Mag Shack. [1]”

That's a tall optic. I can see why you'd want to swap it. Don't they make other mounts for it? Couldn't you get a low profile mount?
They do, but they don’t seem like they will lower it like low mounts do for other optics. I’ll probably need to research some math to know for sure.
