I have an original ca 1874. I loaded BP cartridges way down and fired it quite a bit but quit when the stock cracked. My gosh, the trigger on that thing must be 30 lbs.

I have shot a few smokeless powder 45-70 reloads in my Trapdoor but have gone back to strictly black powder loads with home cast 405 grain bullets. Is it messy? Yes! But it still is a lot of fun.

Trapdoor was an interesting design, still I’ve always been amazed that the Army dumped their .56 Spencer’s and .44 Henry repeaters to return to a single shot rifle, while the rest of the world was moving toward repeaters.

How many 1868 models were produced, I have a 1868 Springfield serial # 2197, stamped 1869.
