My dad would buy one for each of us every year…and kites too. They never lasted very long, but we loved them just the same.

Anyone else remember Tootsie Toy cars? In a box on the checkout counter at the Duckwalls mom frequented. Metal, maybe pressed, maybe cast. Cheap. Can't remember if they were five or ten cents.

Good times indeed. And kids were a lot healthier and better off. Somehow, without helmets knee and elbow pads we all managed to ride bikes and survive.

We had a soda fountain shop in our little town and with a quarter I could get a large Coca-Cola (syrup and soda water), double scoop ice cream cone and a nickel left over for 2 pieces of Bazooka Joe bubblegum.

In the 50's our retail center was the city square. Penney's, Sears, Woolworths, S.S.Kresge (later KMart), etc. There was a corner drugstore with a soda fountain with white coated soda jerks making a real production of serving ice cream treats. I can still taste the ice cream floats.
