Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Julie Golob: Springfield Echelon 4.0FC Review” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/springfield-echelon-4-0fc-review/.

She joind Springfield in 2025: https://www.springfield-armory.com/...as-professional-shooter-and-brand-ambassador/I though Julie Golob shot for team Smith and Wesson. I guess she switched sides.
Julie’s article actually reinforced something I discovered while customizing my own Echelon 4.0C Comp: finding what works for you.
Out of the box, the Echelon has a very good trigger.
My goal was never to build a race gun or chase the lightest trigger possible. I wanted to create a highly defined trigger while maintaining reliability.
Specifically, I wanted:
After researching the available options, I realized that the Tyrant I.T.T.S. and Powder River Precision (PRP) products seemed to solve different parts of what I was looking for.
- Minimal take-up
- A defined wall
- A crisp, predictable break
- Reduced reset travel
- A pronounced reset
I ultimately built a hybrid “Franken-trigger” using:
Because reliability was one of my priorities, I intentionally retained the factory striker spring.
- Tyrant I.T.T.S. trigger shoe
- PRP spring kit
- PRP sear
Neither Tyrant nor PRP specifically recommends this exact combination of parts, but my thought process was that both systems are designed around the Echelon platform and factory component interfaces, so I believed the combination would likely be mechanically compatible.
Fortunately, that assumption proved to be correct.
For me, this wound up being the perfect trigger.
The biggest improvements were minimal take-up, a defined wall, a crisp break, and a pronounced reset.
For anyone interested: the pull weight decreased from approximately 4.5 lbs to 3.25 lbs, although that was never my primary objective.
What surprised me most was that this project wasn’t really about modifying the pistol at all. It was about removing the firearm as a variable so I could expose and improve my own fundamentals.
I discovered that some bad habits I had developed, particularly anticipation, were still my responsibility to correct, but they had likely been reinforced over time by adapting to the characteristics of the factory trigger.
Now that the trigger is more predictable, I can actually see my own skill on the target and work on improving it.
Ultimately, this project wasn’t about buying accuracy. It was about creating a more predictable firearm that would allow me to identify and improve my own fundamentals.
Current setup:
So far, reliability with the reduced recoil spring has been excellent, and I haven’t experienced any issues returning to battery.
- Tyrant I.T.T.S.
- PRP Spring Kit (retaining the factory striker spring)
- PRP Sear
- Apex Tactical Stainless Steel Guide Rod and Cap
- NDZ Performance ISMI -10% recoil spring
- Holosun HE407C-GR X2
Thank you, BassCliff! I appreciate the warm welcome.Hi,
That was very informative. Thanks for sharing. Did your setup take a lot of trial and error? Did you do the work yourself? I've been considering a PRP kit for a couple of my units.
It seems you've been here for a while but this is your first post. Welcome to the community, thanks for joining us.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
Out of curiosity, what are your goals for the PRP kits?
Hi,
Generally, I don't have a problem with factory triggers. If I haven't used a particular unit for a while, it may take a few rounds to get reacquainted.
But I have one unit that has a long takeup through a bowl of oatmeal, until it hits a wall of marshmallow, a little bit of creep like an over-ripe banana, then breaks like a soggy noodle. Reset? Ha!
Because of its reputation here, I was going to drop in a PRP (extreme) kit just to lighten it up a bit and get it to act like a real trigger.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
BassCliff,Hi,
My Echelon triggers are fine. I have an older XD45 Mod2 Tactical that has mush for a trigger. That's the first one I'll replace. Then we'll go from there.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
JSimon78,Well i really don’t do the echelon line. The only one I had I just pawned off to a friend. Yes I said I pawned it off to a friend because he really liked it (yes all laws were applied for the transfer out of state).
JSimon78,
Which Echelon did you have, and what was it that you didn’t like about it?
Jenni
BassCliff,
I’m definitely a Springfield girl! I carried XD9 Mod.1 and Mod.2 (both Subcompact) and had a Mod.3 when I was a firearms instructor at a range in Houston.
I love the XD series but they don’t have the Mod.3 or Mod.4 in subcompact.
I’m not a huge fan of the Hellcat line or the XDS/XDE because they’re very snappy, though they are more easily concealable.
I traded in my beloved XD’s for the Echelon because I had a great deal on it and because it’s optics ready and ported.
Still loving it!
What triggers are you considering for your XD45?
