Nothing wrong with a M-14/M1A. Trained on the former in 1968 at Quantico, up to 500 meters and made Expert. Good sturdy rifle and worked well in the Nam until the McNamara Special, AKA M-16, came along.

I have the M-308 on my Remington 700 SPS Varmint in a B&C V/T stock, with a Timney trigger. I shoot my own handloads and it is so fun, hitting steel.

I WENT IN THE CORP IN 67 AND LOVED THE M1A. I WAS SHOOTING EXPERT BUT THE CPL. WAS NOT SCORING IT AS SUCH UNTIL THE SGT. CAUGHT HIM. IT WAS TOO LATE BY THEN. I WANTED TO BE A SNIPER.

In the right hands, a .308 will go out double that. I’ve seen many a skilled shooter hit targets with precision out way farther than my skillset . Including a 13 yr old female . 800 yards

We shot the M1A out to 600 yards with iron sights in NRA Highpower for years. Using a scope is easy.
Try that at 1,000 yards. Now THAT is a challenge! Not sure the M1A is a 1,000 yard gun...
It's a fun gun, yes!

What I was trying to say was: "Although it is heavier than Col. Cooper mandated in his standards for the Scout Rifle, the Scout/Squad M-1A is a fine evolution of the Scout Rifle concept.
The evolution of the LPVO optics really makes that rifle a 300 yard plus gun.
Col. Cooper maintained that the Scout Rifle was not for engagement in a firefight, but the Scout/Squad M-1A, in my opinion, could be used to extricate oneself from a fight. With a 20 round magazine, or several, one would have the capacity to fight if needed. My 2¢...
