Just Bought the new Springfield Prodigy 3.5

I just purchased the gun yesterday, loaded the first mag with Hornady Critical Duty 115gr, and they will not feed into the ramp. 2nd mag loaded Federal HST 124gr and the same thing Happened! WTH? I am a retired RSO and never have seen this with a brand-new gun! Springfield do you even test the guns before you let them out to sale?

A fairly common issue

Your slide must have sufficient forward velocity upon closing to overcome magazine spring tension and friction to push the round from the magazine into the chamber and go into battery. This is why riding the slide forward causes failure to feed. It is designed to slam forward with full spring force. I tell new students to operate the slide like they are mad at it.

Try using FMJ ball ammo to see if you have the same problem.

If the slide is not going all the way into battery with full spring force but closes when you tap the rear of the slide, that is a tell.

When I encounter this, especially on a new gun, my first suspect is a dirty gun, or lack of lubrication on the rails, or both. I have run into a couple guns with experienced shooters just recently where they were experiencing failures to go into battery. On inspection I found the rails of their guns has been lubed with oil but the guns sat unused for months and the oil dried out.

The anti corrosion gunk factories put on new guns is sticky crap that will retard the forward velocity of the slide. I always break down a new gun and scrub it with solvent using a brush, then use Gunscrubber to hose off any residue. But now the bearing surfaces will be dry and that's not good either. Spritz the internal surfaces with Remoil, then apply a high quality gun grease to the rails on the slide and frame.

Also check the magazines, particularly the follower, to be sure the magazines are presenting the top round at the proper attitude for chambering. Gouges in the bullet jacket or case may suggest misalignment somewhere.
 
fwiw, I've never been an RSO. I did carry several thousand dollars of UC flash money into a Holiday Inn Express for a dope deal. I didn't spend the night though. Girls kept asking if I wad looking for a date.:ROFLMAO:
I just checked my never fired Prodigy 3.5 with the same factory jhp ammunition. The pistol chambered from the slide stop and forceful reverse force hand over slide cycles.
So, it's probably not a common issue with that pistol platform...

Stop it, everyone knows that Leo's especially RSO are the best shooters, especially in Pasadena California this one was able to make a one shot hit through a windshield.

Actually now for the specifics, if indeed the OP does have a problem.

1. if you are an RSO and never experienced a feeding issue that seems really weird but simply changing the ammo to something the gun like may help. Why not start with some ball ammo to give you a base line.

2. as an experience Leo and RSO you need to explain stuff to use non LEO's Non RSO's simple like, what kind of jams are you experiencing? Nose Dives, Stove pipes, Not even leaving the mag? Give use something to go on.

3. As an experienced Leo and RSO I am sure that you did lube and clean your pistol before trying to use it so we will just throw that suggestion out then door.

4. Did you inspect the magazines make sure there were no burrs and did you problems follow each mag or just one?

5. As a LEO and RSO again you would never short stoke cycling the slide, but just in case did you use the slide release or sling shot.
