Woman used 9mm on Black Bear attacking her dog

While I would have went with a larger service size handgun, and I am sure this wasn’t her load of choice the 9mm 147 gr FP TMJ is nothing to sneeze at. It will punch through 32” of gel as Chuck Haggard has shown and I know many many knowledgeable folks that run those 147 gr and a Glock 19 in bear country with several successful bear stops

Which species is leading the death race? Brown/Black bears or sharks. Seems like every time you turn around someone somewhere in the world is in harm's way with these creatures.

Is it just the news media that jacks these unfortunate stories up....or has it been this way all along and the general public was never made aware of the danger.

I used to work with this guy. He moved out west after he retired. The Grizzly attack happened when he was scouting for Elk.

"....when deadly force is used against you, you use deadly force to repel the deadly force,”

If I were wandering about in the Kenai Peninsula I believe I would have upped the 9mm to a 10mm or carrying a 12 gauge with slugs? Maybe both?

Latest numbers are that 13% of the adult population carry at least some of the time .

A large percentage of them are not otherwise gun enthusists , but for pragmatic self protection . Hence lots of them have a Carry Gun as their only handgun , if not only firearm .

Compact 9mm are popular , and not unreasonable choice for that role . So yeah , if you only have one , that's what they'll carry in the brush also .

I get the small guns but for me I follow Clint Smith as he said, guns are suppose to be Comforting not Comfortable!

About the smallest I carry is a Cimmander/Glock 19 size in autos and a 3 or 4” K frame in wheelguns fortunately at 6’ 1” and 230 I can pull it off without having to dress around it too much

I largely agree with you . I'm just reporting the predominate trends .

Think of shoes.
Some folks have one for every occasion. A closet full. Some have 2 pair. Work and not at work.
If all you own is the one gun, it gets the job done. Not everyone owns more than one gun and not everyone owns a large caliber.
Just because you dont own a gun or have just one, doesnt mean you should not go out in nature.
Folks swim in the ocean, yet sharks are there. Cant CCW out in the surf, yet there we go

Curiosity killed the _____________.

Some time back I read about guide up there that decided he'd carry a 9mm loaded with Underwood hard cast +P's, to see if it was viable as a defense against Grizzlies.

He got his wish, and the Underwood performed, took an entire magazine, fifteen rounds, if memory serves.

As I value my life, 9mm for that duty wouldn't have ever been in my thought process.

I agree, but go back to my statement earlier. If all you own is a 9mm …..

I agree 100% with you. Not doing a 9mm in bear country, but I own many handguns and calibers
