I'm planning on taking my 7.62x39 hunting this year. Accompanying this will be my Glock 20. Or my Taurus Tracker .357mag. Or... SQUIRREL!

Sorry, here are the results of my taking my AK-15/AR47 to the range.

It's the communist red one, to reflect the caliber. It's a Sharps. I put a 6x42 mil dot on it.

I got lucky with the adjustments and the top-middle put me in the 4" circle.

Middle-right tightened things up. I moved it to the hundred for final verification. Last round after this picture involved the untimely demise of a rogue golf ball.

I have had this for ...20 years? Maybe? I know its a "blem"; the hole for the magazines release is not straight up and down.

Anyways, I don't know that they ever did. I just bought the lower. The complete upper, minus the stylish red components, is Bear Creek Arsenal.

I needed a hunting rifle in Colorado and 5.56 is not allowed there for deer. So 7.62x39 with Duramags.

.5.56 is a tad light for deer anyway. 7.62 x 39 is similar in power to the old 30/30 which has dumped tons of deer for a LONG time,

( Not picking on Shibadog particulary , but this quote is a good set up for the topic generally . )

There can be a tendency to extrapolate from the laws / regs where they live / primarily hunt , to be synomous with what can be effective / ethical to hunt .

That said , there are an uncountable number of factory and wildcat AR-15 compatable ctgs concurrently or specifically suited to hunting . Well established mainstream options of widest availability include :

7.62x39 ( with reliable mags the weak point )

Supersonic .300 Whisper / Blackout essentially duplicate x39 ballistics .

.350 Legend quickly became very popular .

6.8 SPC didn't catch on as hoped , but it's not dead yet .

.450 , .458 , and .50 Beowolf are intended for larger , but will certianly kill mere deer also .

.223 / 5.56 will have several cavaets , but if :

Hunting specific projectiles . Careful shot placement , and reasonable distance , it will certianly slay Bambi .

I agree there ARE rounds in AR that will work for medium game (as I said, 7.62 x 39 is similar to 30/30 and nobody’s says that’s not a decent deer round) . I’d argue though that 5.56/.223 isn’t one of them. CAN it take deer? Sure. Heck the poachers choice for years was .22 LR. Is it more likely to wound than deliver a quick clean ethical one shot stop? Almost assuredly. The best .223 loads deliver a fraction of the energy of larger caliber deer rifles (not to mention a shotgun slug). If you are hunting, you need to use enough gun to deliver a clean, quick kil. Sadly the media and Hollywood have many believing the .223/5.56 is a “powerful” round. It’s not, it’s a decent varmint round. Calling any .22 centerfire a “medium” power round (or more) is a joke. In the real world a .308/‘06 is a “medium” power round, while things like .338, .375, 45/70/.458 are “heavy”😏. Use enough gun.
