Poor Lamar.

"According to WCSC, the incident occurred at a home on Elderwood Drive in Ladson. The 13-year-old told police he was alone when a vehicle pulled up and one of the two suspects attempted to gain entry to the home. In fear for his life, the boy grabbed his mother’s gun.

“He saw a subject out back trying to get inside so he fired his mother’s gun through the door and the subject reportedly fired back,” Charleston County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The two suspects fled the scene, but not before police say the 13-year-old fired off several more rounds as the car drove away.

As WCSC reports, the grey Chevy Sonic vehicle later turned up at Trident Hospital with multiple bullet holes in it. An affidavit states that the passenger — later identified as 31-year-old Lamar Brown — had three gunshot wounds and was in critical condition. He eventually died from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle — 28-year-old Ira J. Bennett — was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime."

Sadly, the family will likely be subject to legal persecution.

"How did a 13 year old have access to a loaded firearm?"

"Why did he fear for his life? Was it the color of the criminal's skin? He must be trained to hate!"

"Why didn't he hide and call 911?"

"Why did he shoot at the car as they tried to escape his violent behavior?"

"Why did he shoot through a door? He should have known better!"

"Why did he think someone needed to die for attempting to commit a property crime? Who taught him his family's possessions have more value than an armed criminal's life?"

"His parents are evil! They must be racists or closet racists!"

And, of course, ""WE NEED MORE GUN LAWS!!" (Left that out earlier).

It would be appropriate for the officer who arrested the second guy to say, "Your accomplice is dead. You will be spending a large part of your life in prison. You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes."

When I was the same age, I had a shotgun in my bedroom, and was already proficient with it. One night my parents were out, and we lived in the sticks. My 11 year old sister woke me from a dead sleep and told me she saw a stranger in the living room. Yeah, I was cared, but loaded my 12-gauge with what I had, #4 shot, and snuck through out small one-level hone slowly and quietly. Yeah, I would have opened fire if need be. Turns out that my sister must have dreamed it. No one was there. Scared me enough so that when my parents returned home after midnight, they were surprised to see me sitting on the living room couch with my shotgun. "What the hell are you doing, son?" Dad thought my story was funny. I didn't.

Yes, unfortunately, in certain states the kid and the family would be crucified. I hope and pray it all turns out well for them.

Thank you for your indulgence,

That happened 11 yrs ago

I recall another incident at least 20 years ago or maybe more, where two armed burglars began crawling through a kitchen window, and if I remember correctly, a ten year old who was alone in the house, grabbed his .22 rifle and began shooting them. They perps immediately crawled back through the window to get away, the kid continuing to fire. I know that one perp bleed out before he got across the lawn. I can't recall what happened to the other perp. Don't mess with that 10-year old when he's armed! :)

South Carolina has immunity from criminal and civil liabilty in self defense and castle doctrine cases. Also South Carolina has no law prohibiting access to firearms by minors.
Same in Georgia. And any stand your ground use of a firearm. If you have a legal right to be there and use a firearm to defend yourself there can’t be any civil prosecution.
