Celebrating 75 Years of CCI — A Trip to Lewiston

CCI, or Cascade Cartridge, Inc., traces its roots to the mid-1940s, when brothers Vernon and Dick Speer relocated to Lewiston to get into the reloading components business. Vernon's bullet-making operation, Speer Bullets, took off first.

Dick followed with plans to make brass cartridge cases, but the timing wasn't great as brass was hard to come by, and the case business never found its footing. So Dick pivoted to primers instead, bringing on an explosives chemist in 1951 to help him develop small-arms primers that were both non-corrosive and non-mercuric, a meaningful improvement at the time. This is what would birth CCI as we know it today.

For decades, his feature articles in Outdoor Life Magazine brought excitement, enjoyment and a sense of appreciation for wildlife and hunting to millions of people throughout the world.

The sense of adventure that came alive in his many writings inspired, informed, and educated outdoorsmen and hunters about wildlife conservation and modern wildlife management.

Literally stepped foot on Lewiston ID soil back in 1987 by way of a CG Buoy tender running the Columbia/Snake river systems that the Coast Guard maintained the commercial towboat buoy line for safe transits even to this day. I was reloading in those days using Sierra, Speer and Nosler bullets along w/CCI primers and I also never knew the factory and the family history of CCI was a Lewiston, ID based company...small world. Very good story of two hard working brothers that made a BIG mark on this world.

Really appreciate you sharing the article here!
Funnily enough, I did get a chance not only to visit the Jack O'Connor Center in Lewiston, but I should be having one of their current curators/guides on my podcast over on TFB sometime in the next few months, if not, a straight-up article about Jack, his life, and the center itself.

He did. The second sentence in the article.

I've never heard of a Lewiston, Maine.
not in the headline, that gets ones attention, not much later.

Lewiston is Maine's second-largest city, situated on the Androscoggin River roughly halfway between Portland and Augusta. Known for its rich mill-town history, diverse cultural landscape, and being home to Bates College, the city offers a mix of urban amenities and outdoor access

well it worked didn't it? Now I get 2x the audience

Not reading it because it's Idaho not Maine is a very on-brand way to keep your worldview exactly 3,000 miles wide. You didn't get the wrong idea from the headline; you just refused to read past it. Different problem.

Is the headline's job is to give you all the information in the article for you before you've read it?
uh...not exactly.....

i looked up where cci was, and when i saw a different location, i figured "what else" is missing from the story..

so no...i did not read the story

I would think someone who knows Lewiston, Maine well, knows that there's no CCI plant there.
no one "needs to know" all of a place.

right here in my state, we have Metal Form.....

i never knew they made gun parts, especially magazines, here in my state....quiet, nestled away in a machine shop.

until my bro-in-law who works there..??

told me, AFTER he got to know i was involved in the shooting sport

go back to your mom's basement.
