The spray and pray concept was cemented during the Vietnam era with 30 round magazines. I don't recall exactly what the numbers were, but I read somewhere else that over 50K rounds were expended for each casualty in VN.
Those numbers are up significantly from WW I and II

50k, nope.
Well, what would be the correct number? This is reported via the Internet...

The U.S. military consumed an estimated 50,000 rounds of small arms ammunition for every enemy soldier killed during the Vietnam War.Factors in Ammunition ExpenditureSuppressive Fire: Most rounds were used in tactical suppressive fire to pin down or deter the enemy rather than for direct hits.Jungle Terrain: Dense foliage limited visibility, increasing the volume of blind or semi-directed automatic fire.Weapon Technology: The adoption of the M16 rifle allowed for high-rate, controllable automatic and semi-automatic firing capabilities.

Near many of our bases that were continually probed by the enemy, we would randomly fire directed harrassment and interdiction fire, or H&I or mad minute fire, to make it dangerous for anyone to be out there. I burned through a crapload of H&I rounds on the base perimeter. It was a hoot and impressive when you got everybody doing it. Gunships did similar mad minutes. I don't think we ever expected to kill anybody with H&I, it was more psyop than anything.

50,000 rounds weigh over 13000 pounds, that’s a mighty lot of ammo for one kill 😉, but if you include suppressive fire that’s possible, especially from mini guns shooting from gun ships. But then you have another problem with the calculation, body count under those condiitions can only be a guesstimate at best. At 1300 pounds per body few on the ground would ever see a dead body.

I carry a Colt Agent 38 Special 97% of the time.

One day I may try a single stack 9mm. Just haven't thought much about it or looked.
Although I carry my J-Frame more nowadays, there are distinct advantages to a reliable auto. Although I have a half a dozen high capacity Glocks, for general carry my single stacks fit a nitch in between high capacity Glocks and my J-Frame. My two favorites are the S&W Shield line with the 9mm for warm weather and .45 for cold, all loaded with Federal HST ammo.
My other two single stacks are a Glock 43X and a Ruger Ec9s.
If I am with my wife or others i need to protect I will carry an auto 😉.

I'm interested in what Walther comes up as they are working on updating their lineup.

I started carrying a small waist pack a few months ago and it's revolutionized the amount of ammo I can carry easily. In a tiny 1.5L pack I can easily keep 2-4 spare 15 round magazines along with my wallet/keys etc all tucked in nice and secure. I find myself carrying 4x extra 15rd magazines just because.

So with the rounds on my gun itself, I'm usually carrying ~75 rounds every day. Has nothing to do with feeling like I'm going to run into a terrorist and more just because it's easy.
