ok, so i will preface this with several reminders....

1) i have had 4 major back surgeries, where i cannot stand straight or steady....so i tend to shake....

2) i have a current knee problem, where a replacement knee is in my future

3) this optic is installed on my carry, G-19

4) all new factory ammo, Fiocchi 115 grain non hollow points.

ok, i had bought, and installed a Holson optic, (that's in the what did you buy in the last 48 hours thread)

took it to my club, and my club is short, maybe 40 feet long

and no way to know how many feet i send out the target carrier, as its only a toggle switch,.... put out...take back

i tried to zero in the sight, maybe in the range of 35- 40 foot distance..??? i dunno.

i took only 100 rounds of ammo

the pic below was the last 20 rounds, and frankly, i got much closer to center.

so, opinions/advice, be honest, otherwise DO NOT RESPOND...

given my "disabilities",

would you think MORE practice or.....MORE fine tuning

or

BOTH

thanks in advance i gotta go clean/lube that gun

I would say fire it off a rest, just to make sure the optic is tuned in as close as possible. Then start practicing in your normal stance. That way you know if it's you or the optic that is off. And then work on techniques to correct your shooting, if it is off. If dot sights are new to you, it will take practice to get used to them. It is a whole different ball game shooting with dot sights over shooting with iron sights. Don't get discouraged.

I agree here.
Fire off a rest. If optic is on zero, then good to go.
With age/health issues, your shooting is just fine if you have the shakes.

regarding shooting from a rest...the gun club does have 2 bench rests...

i had problems sitting down as the 2 stools they had were too short, even though, one was taller..!!

then, each rest was difficult to use, as the gun is a compact, and there was nothing to put under the magazine to level it...

i was actually pointing at the ceiling each time i tried each bench rest.

i tried using the cardboard ammo box, no good....i tried using my Uplula...no good.....

just nothing available to bring up the rear of the gun.

of course, later this week, (time allowable to me), i will get to the range, as i have seen different bench rests..

yes too by the way, several excellent videos did speak of bench rest zeroing, which like i said, i had tried.

all good stuff, from u guyz......thanks

i do know too, practice "makes perfect", and frankly, i really do not shoot that G-19 all that much.....i know, not a good thing to be lacking.

as you and others have seen, i can at times, wipe out the center of a target, but most times, its with longer handguns, not a compact like the G-19...

and that is with the unsteady stance, and shakes

i was getting disappointed up till those last 20 rounds, which in retrospect, i wished i had also taken at least 100 reloads.

i guess i was expecting 1" to 2" groupings with the green dot.

rest the barrel on a rest. where the underside pic rail would be. a sandbag type rest or one of the foam "stairstep" rests would be good. the magwell doesnt need to be on anything other than you holding it.
if someone is available, maybe have them take a few shot to confirm zero. sometimes a dot is on target but it is the shooter that is off slightly. other shooters can confirm. if everyone hits at the same spot, then that shows where the dot is calibrated to.
good shooting. dont get discouraged.

I fully agree with using a rest to zero an optic. It takes out a lot of other variables during the zero process. I find the stools to be uncomfortable also, but I use my range bag as a rest, and for me it works well.
thanks, if i can get to the range, this week, i will ask the RSO for what they have in the closet, as well as what's on the back bench...

i DID SEE a video where the trainer was showing him using his range bag

at the very least too, the optic is a co-witness, so i still have iron sights available.

theres where i know NOW...i screwed up...for some reason, i was recalling what i thought 1 video showed...supporting the magazine to level the gun, as to not stray too high or too low...

i will retry that...

thanks

i built a rest just for my arms.. they are freakishly long , i could be a pterodactyl

our range has concrete benches with seats that spin up or down to get right height, it took me many times to get the feel right

on those days i cannot hold steady.. the rest comes out

also for sighting in i use a laser that secures in the barrel and set a distance of 25 feet .

we all age, i suffer from getting worse knees, bad back even after surgeries and hands that some days refuse to hold steady

never feel less , because you use a rest or anything that helps you be steady or enjoy the range.
enjoyment is KEY.

our range, is filled with many of us older folks so the range of devices i have seen is pretty wide.

here is a laugh.... my ar10 its prone on a mat 90 % of the time
or my table that is my ht and my folding chair

yes, with me all days are like what i had previously explained.

however, i do all my shooting standing up, not ever sitting down, since should i ever be in dire need to defend myself, i'm certain i will be walking, or standing. so to practice standing up, is what i do.

although yes too, just to zero in the optic sitting down with some sort of bench rest, is something i will have to work out ASAP.

yes, old age........."zero's in" on everyone

i did also see a few videos on those laser sighters.......

I feel your pain on being tall trying to use benches/rests made for 5’4” human specimens. It’s why I zero mostly 2h standing,

Your target looks great to me at about QC yds with a short barrel. I know you said no markings, but maybe halfway would be closer to 21 feet? Don’t know about you, but beyond that, I think I’m seeking escape, not engagement (I am not a public servant, and unless I can do it safely, I don’t think I’m responsible for public safety).

I have found with guns I can’t use comfortably on a rest, leaning against the stall wall does stabilize my aim somewhat. I would say that if you were aiming with dot in center every shot, and the rounds are still in a circular group, it’s your barrel doing the figure 8 thing more so than your aim or trigger pull.

I still suggest a half distance attempt and see how you do. I sight in all my pistol optics at 7 yds (21 feet). With that sighting in, you’ve seen my hits at 3yds, 5yds, 7 yds, and 15 yds. For me, that 21 foot sight in just works.

Finally, if you thing it is your shaking, grip, balance affecting your sighting in, nothing wrong with asking someone to help you!

Enjoy your journey, and as someone above mentioned, looks like you still hit center mass…you would have won!

I’ll respond anyway I want…..🤣🤣

Seriously I don’t think it’s all that bad, maybe try different ammo and bullet weight, what I was told when I tried a dot was to have the dot just above the front site, don’t know if this is right or not, maybe try sighting in a little closer, say 7 yards, and see if this helps, then go out further…..seriously, most self defense shooting is 7 yards (21’) or less…..

@ Old-Me , Don't feel to bad about the swaying and shaking going on these days. I have been disabled since 2005. Now 21 years later I don't have any core strength and barely half the arm and grip strength. I have to sit down while shooting these days. I can still shoot a mag full while standing but after that I'm done.

ok...first, this Holson optic was factory zeroed in at 25 yards...not feet.

many have said on the videos to zero at 25 yards...

my range, wants us to shoot at 25 feet, there are markings on the floor, but they repainted the floor..thus no markings for me to go by.

i could only "surmise" that distance i was trying to zero at by using the above lights, that are "around" 25 feet away

yes, if i had the thug at 25 yards away, i'd be limping away, as that could lead to murder charges.....

i try all my target shooting at the FBI stats that, "most" assaults happen with-in or about 20 feet of us.

unfortunately, the club is always empty when i get there, so no other help.

the range however, comes with an RSO, and a few other NRA instructors if need be.

the club being like 8-12 minutes from my house is quicker for me to go back home ASAP if i need to.

i'd like to at least zero in the optic to at least that 7 to 8 yards that i actually do shoot at, with all my guns.

thanks, you helped with some great advice.

i'm shrinking, i used to be 5' 10", i am down to 5' 7" now...

i think the back operations and compressed disks are causing this

my defensive ammo is 147 gr, Federal HST...but i was shooting FMJ 115 grain, if only due to the cost of the higher grain, and my very limited amount of that ammo.

yes, the green dot should be "just slightly above the front sight", and i still have to make adjustments to that, left/right adjustments seem to be spot on.

the target carrier at the club is much higher that at the range...does that make a difference..??

i dunno......

as i mentioned above, my club does not mark the floor, or have a target carrier with yardage......just a toggle switch that sends it out, and brings it back

in a way, that's like me too...i can shoot 1 mag for sure, standing up, the others i get tired real fast, but i fight that tiredness as much as i can.

the swaying is disturbing to me, and i just wish i didn't....

none of us can turn back the clock...would be great if we can....eh..???
