Revolvers. I need ideas 💡

I know I’m going down this rabbit hole but I’ll do it.

I’m starting to help my mom look for revolvers. Im wondering what is out there and what is good. I know S&W makes revolvers and that’s pretty much it.
What's the purpose? Fun range gun? CCW? Strictly in the home-defense? Stop large bears? :geek: Somewhere between a NAA mini & a 500 S&W there's a gun for Mom!

i like my Ruger GP 100 2.5" snubby, shoots both .38 and .357, which for her...maybe just go with .38..??

that's all i got

you'll surely get....3,594,684,298,483,099,387,176,999, more opinions shortly

also just remember that revolvers have a much heavier trigger pull....

does she have arthritis, or any other issue(s) with her hands or fingers.....???

Hi,

Here's another "best of" review. You cant go wrong with a S&W 686 or Ruger GP 100.

I really enjoy my 686 Plus but it might be too much for Mom. ;)

I’m thinking about going to a range and having my mom try it.

Well I rather have a F-ton of answers. Last known she doesn’t have arthritis in her fingers. Yes I’ll see who has a .38 to rent.

I have the S&W 686 Plus 4". It is heavy, so your mom may not enjoy it much (i could be wrong). However, it shoots like dream. Shooting 38spl is really easy, even with +P. You may consider the 3" version and save a bit on weight. If you can rent one, do so.
Is this for home defense?

I'll go ahead and say it .... Rossi. Look for a used 38 Special. They are out there. Save money over the used Smith/Colt/Ruger or new Taurus. Buy ammo for practice.

Their action design has remained the same for years, a virtual copy of a Smith & Wesson, except the Rossi uses a coil mainspring. They tend to have very crisp triggers and overall slick actions right from the box. I wouldn't think twice if the price was right.

Rossi may be owned by Taurus, but in this scenario, I'd take a Rossi over a Taurus any day, and twice on Sunday.

Yes, I highly recommend that she try some rental guns first.
There are tons of good revolvers out there. They come in all sizes and weights. S&W, Colt and Ruger are at the top of the list. But for something that she won't shoot a lot, there are other cheaper options.
There are tons of good used revolvers out there. Don't be afraid to buy used if you know how to check one over properly.
Generally, for a woman's home defense revolver, I recommend a medium frame revolver in .38 Special. The S&W "K" frames and similar being the perfect candidates. I try to stay away from the small framed guns. Especially for a beginner. Most find the recoil is too much and won't practice with them enough to learn to shoot it well. Large framed guns may be too heavy or unwieldy for them to shoot well. I've noticed that several people are recommending the S&W "L" frame guns. Great guns to be sure but they may also fall into that too heavy category for her. Same for the Ruger GP-100. However, some women will surprise you and take to a certain gun you never expected. So its best to let her try several and pick her own. ;)
