What is that?
Thanks OldGrunt.
Not counting the decorative toys made today The Monkey Fist has a long history from the days of sail. Frequently they had a musket ball or a smooth rock inside the knot to give them more authority. Laws restricting "knotted rope" were some of the first probations on weapons. Knives were a common tool, knotted rope was the equipment of thugs and press gangs.

Years ago I used to make them. I would weigh them down with big heavy nuts (fasteners, for those with dirty minds!). I still have a few around here. I even have one on my keychain, a mini one. I might start making a few again. A lot of people asked me to make them for them back when I used to work offshore as a commercial diver.

I can see the knotted rope in use. But the pegs and golf ball i have no idea how its used
They are meant to be attached to a heaving line to throw towards a dock from a ship, or vice versa, from the dock to a ship. Then the heaving line would be attached to a heavier mooring line, to be pulled onto a ship from the dock, or vice versa. Sailors over time figured out a monkey's fist could make a good weapon.

I thought that stupid law was already gone.
Last year because a mazon doesn't sell auto magic knives, I purchased 6 or 8 Chinese made clones off of, you guessed it, a mazons.
Their prohibition means only that US made automatic knives are not on their site.
Most were bitchmade clones.
No I don't care one bit about bitchmade due to their anti gun stance.

In the Navy, they still hold Boatswains mate Olympics where heaving lines are flung using monkey fist for distance.
