Cool photo! I love being in the mountains whether I get my animal or not. I saw my first ruffed grouse here on my last hunt. They are normally lowland birds, but this one was high up, and not as spooky as normal. It sat on a branch and looked at us from about ten feet away until finally deciding to fly. I think elk season is about done, and when it is, I'm taking Roxy dog up and try bagging a spruce grouse or two.

After two weeks of scouring the mountains around here, I saw about 11 doe, and zero bucks. Finally, on the 24th of this month, the last day of the season, I saw what I thought was a big doe down a treed ravine, until its head turned and grew a nice 4X4 rack! He was almost out of range to get a good shot with iron sights, especially since he was on a fast walk. But his side was to me, which was good. I followed his gate with my Belgium Browning BLR .243, pulled the trigger and hoped for the best. He dropped like brick...got him just behind the shoulder but about 4" too high. Success! Last time I went deer hunting was in 1986. The worst part was getting him up the hill and into the rig. My hunting buddy couldn't help due to his bad knee, and I felt like about 90 years old instead of 72 after going up and down that hill. Luckily, a young man came along and saved the day helping us.
Congrats! When we moved to West Virginia in the late 80’s my buddy (a local) took me out after deer that first year. He said “always hunt uphill from the truck”. I said “why”, his response “do ya wanna drag a deer uphill or downhill”. Good advice in the mountains👍. At 75 dragging a deer is a whole lot harder than it was 40 years ago😏
