I have always wondered at the stories about how “hard to handle” the 10mm was/is. I never found that to be the case, ever. Seemed like excuses and/or CYA responses for poor shooting skills.
Just a couple you all might be interested in seeing …
The one with the Salmon is about a three year old Kodiak, the other is a SE Brownie maybe 3 or 4 taken just south of Sitka…
Gives an idea of size…. That Salmon is about 30 inches or so, the paw is about 10.5 inches across. The brownie weighed...
I don’t think that most people really have a good feel for either just how big or just how fast a Brown Bear may be. Full grown Coastal Brownies in Alaska can average 1100 pounds and move at 35 mph (read a 6 second 100yard dash) more over they can take a heard an lung shot an still have enough...
I have started using the HST bullets in the 10mm for Bear deterrent for the reasons you state in your comment. I agree completely with your conclusions by experience that these munitions in the .45 and 9mm Are very effective.
9mm and .38 are more likely to simply wound and/or make the bear more aggressive than not!
A .45ACP with a proper loading has been know to be effective but I’d not field one unless that was my only choice for the same reasons as stated above.
I’m not sure what exactly the z definition of an...
Although the .44 Mag and it’s larger brethren the .454 are both suitable Bear calibers I’d suggest the .41 mag for consideration. It’s as effective, but lighter, sn easer to handle in a wheel gun platform.
I was born an raised in Alaska. Bears are a part of your environment when you do that.
There are a couple of things I think may be overlooked here.
If you’re using bear spray I’d suggest the sticky foam type that has less overspray. It’s draw back is it must be aimed somewhat better than liquid...
LOLOLOL!!
Indeed it could have been!! But, considering the time frame an who was running the Bureau in that time period an the then predilection to “somewhat” of a superior, sexist and arrogant attitude of the male power structure involved, it lends strongly to my supposition in my earlier...
Looks almost like a “scout” variant more than a “tanker”
I have my Dads that he had in WW2. I’ll pull it out tomorrow an pull some measurements an post.
I concur! I have fielded 10mm since the introduction of the Bren 10. I am also an end user of the Springfield XD and XDm series. Among them is an EDC XDm 5.25 in 10mm which I waited a long time for Springfield to introduce!
From out of the box to this date it has operated flawlessly. Running a...
