    See-Whiz

Talking to some Navy folks I was with overseas, the early versions had some software problems causing them to go into a do loop of sorts and not firing at all. Consequently, CIWS became "Chr**t It Won't Shoot."

Panzer III — German World War II Medium Tank

Good article. The Pz III was a little late for the campaign in France where PZ I and II dominated. The best tank the Germans had at the time was the Czech 38T with a 37mm gun. The author is correct about the PZ III being active up until the end of the war in Norway. Below is a video of Pz...

M113 APC: Ubiquitous Armored Personnel Carrier In Vietnam to Ukraine

I never had any experience with it, though a few in my unit had and a few did like it. But, you just reinforced keeping the caliber .50.

    Convair NB-36H Nuclear-Powered Bomber

To power an airplane was dumb and dangerous. but the mention of Chernobyl and the then-futuristic idea of mini nuclear reactors is comparing apples and oranges. Chernobyl was a catastrophic event because of faulty test procedures and mediocre management. Mini nuclear reactors need to be...

AR Ranking By Manufacturer & Tier

At the training base in the aughts they were using Bushmaster M16A2s a lot. Gobs of them (like that scientific description?). I never heard any complaints.

AR Ranking By Manufacturer & Tier

Browse YouTube for a bit and you'll find different people doing rankings. Search long enough and you're bound to find a ranking more to your liking. But I have had a "destitute" 14.5in carbine for several years and it's never failed me and does fine out to 250m.

    Watchtower Firearms files for bankruptcy

I have been receiving their newsletters and was considering getting one of their Type 10s in NATO 7.62 although I was in no rush. Just as well I guess.

    this just in

Because in the day, many countries spoke French as an official language to communicate internationally. This dates to colonial days and was long recognized as an international language. Mrs. Cedric took French in HS even though she was born in Germany. Look at Algeria, Syria, Africa, SE Asia...

RIP Mr. & Mrs. Gene Hackman

RIP. Do you pick your feet in Poughkeepsie? Man, The French Connection, what a great movie. One of his lesser known movies that I really liked was Uncommon Valor.

    Wooly Pully Sweaters

We were authorized to wear them as an outside garment until late 70s in Germany. Wool sort of but not as itchy to me as other wool clothing and were very popular. Later we could wear them underneath our uniform shirt. I don't know what happened to mine, but I probably outgrew it. :rolleyes...

    The Steyr AUG gets replaced

In the Cold War days their 4,700 man brigade was not to be trifled with. If they captured you during training maneuvers they'd tie you up to a tree and leave it up to your unit to find you. Back then they took things seriously with a history of oppression by the Nazis during WWII. Belgium and...

Is this the rise of Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil?

Having known a few people who have left the military and went to work at a Toyota plant this is not surprising. If one expects to go in and work hard for eight hours a day and then go home to the family one had better adjust his expectations. The culture is one of continuous improvement and...

    AI and the media

I agree completely. I would only add that videos can be put together with real people and real footage, yet completely miss the mark in relation to the video's title. I.e, "authentic" click bait and propaganda.

Remember The Alamo! February 23, 1836

The compound itself is fairly large, but what struck me was the height of the walls; that is, not very high at all. As depicted in the movies they seem to be pretty formidable but that was not the case . Despite heavy losses, it's easy to see how Santa Anna's troops managed to scale the walls.

    Up-Armoring the M4 Sherman

Fires were largely due to ammo cooking off, not fuel. Contrary to the movies German tanks were petrol also, not diesel. The King Tiger encounter you mention is, I suspect, fairly late in the war when later model Shermans had wet ammo storage which cut down on fires significantly. During the...

Meet Your New ATF Director ~ Kash Patel, as Trump Reshapes Federal Law Enforcement

That's what I think. The headline is a bit of an exaggeration. He's acting director until the ATF's reorganization and leadership changes take place, possibly rolling it in to the FBI.

Anytime you see "Houthis" substitute with "Iran."

    Up-Armoring the M4 Sherman

    1. My main critique (as usual) is the notion that the Sherman was solely for infantry support. It was not. It was designed for offensive actions whether part of an armored division or as an independent tank battalion supporting an infantry division. That is the reason why the gun was called...

M113 APC: Ubiquitous Armored Personnel Carrier In Vietnam to Ukraine

We had a contemporary 20mm cannon already for the M114 scout track. We didn't have to take anything out of storage. The questions we need to ask is what is the role of the vehicle, what is the logistic support for the 20mm, crew training, ammo storage, engine power, etc. All are tradeoffs...
