You're probably right. Better to leave it as is with violent criminals having free reign and continually multiplying. Not a good idea to do something to greatly reduce the problem.

I'm sure some would like to try. It would have to be carefully written to prevent that. But self defense isn't a felony and has to factor in as well. I don't know what furthering justice is. But it would guarantee fewer violent felons repeating their trade against additional victims.
