I love my Caniks. I have the Mc9LS, a Prime, and a couple of Mete SF's. My advice to your friend is that the Mc9 series is very over sprung (has a very stiff spring), so he needs to rapidly run that slide a bunch by hand and that will help break the spring in. Here are a few pics:

I never could get used to the U notch and ended up taking a Sharpie and blacking out the U. I have the 3-dot tritiums on my 4.0 and I prefer them over the U notch. I've got so used to using an optic, that almost all of my handguns that are optic ready have an optic mounted.

My vote would be a YES! Half of my 1911's are optic ready and all 3 wear optics. They were fun to shoot before, and even more fun now. I highly recommend owning at least one 1911 with an optic.
