Discussion: Ayoob: Should You Always Get Off the X?

Survivors of multiple encounters have information that is absolutely invaluable for training others to survive deadly encounters. It's unfortunate the public today despises LEO that have armed encounters. Several years ago a Seattle officer was involved in two absolutely justifiable shootings...

Discussion: First Look: The New Springfield Armory TRP Series

Modern engines commonly run 200,000-300,000 miles. Many of them, including performance vehicles, use MIM connecting rods. The process today is not like it was 50 years ago. 75 years ago, plastic pistols would have been throw-away items.

Discussion: Ayoob: Why the "Plain Jane" 1911 is Right for Me

🤔 Hmmmmm Lots of different platforms does not make any of them actually better.

Discussion: Ayoob: Why the "Plain Jane" 1911 is Right for Me

Many people feel as you do. If I buy a $90,000 truck and it saves my life three years later, after blowing a tire and rolling it over, and insurance only pays up $60,000, I would be grateful to be alive. And while you may be on a tight budget where a cheap, $700 pistol seems like a fortune...

Discussion: Ayoob: Why the "Plain Jane" 1911 is Right for Me

While many enhancements do improve the shoot ability of the 1911, they are most beneficial in competition, with hundreds of rounds fired while timed. Actual defense use rarely requires even one magazine change, and the comfortable beaver-tail is not as important. I am a small guy, 72, and find...

Discussion: Two Biggest First-Time Gun Buyer Mistakes

It's unfortunate most new gun buyers don't do any research. Especially if a range for sample firing is not available. For carry, there is a lot of good information available, including practical methods of carrying larger and heavier handguns. Too many people buy a handgun and a box of shells...

Discussion: Ayoob: Is .45 Still Better Than 9mm?

Finally, an excellent breakdown! Practice not only increased accuracy, it builds real confidence, a big advantage in the heat of battle. I watched a video of a female officer attempting to handle a suspect with a knife. She did NOT stop him 20+ feet away. He slowly stepped to within about 12...

Discussion: Ayoob: Is .45 Still Better Than 9mm?

I am shocked at the number of cops that do absolutely wild, magazine dumps. If the folks in uniform are that scared, why did they choose that career?

Discussion: Ayoob: Is .45 Still Better Than 9mm?

Lightning fast shooting...... How relevant is it in actual.gunfights? I was never fast when I was in the Marines, and not fast now. I want a cartridge that hits hard. I found out long ago the .44 magnum was far more than I was willing to tolerate. .357 magnum is perfect in a revolver. I am...

Discussion: Ichord Report: What If Congress Had Let the M16 Die?

The magazine of the Henry seems to not be a good design for combat conditions. As I recall, the Spencer cartridge was also lacking. The war came before these tools were fully developed. The Winchester was nearly around the corner.

Discussion: Ichord Report: What If Congress Had Let the M16 Die?

For battle, there is no comparison between the M14 and M16. I think the M16 was a decently designed platform. Accurate variations work very well in prairie dog towns. Laughable cartridge for man size targets. And here we are decades later, still issuing our combat troops "pop guns". Sad.

Discussion: Ayoob: My Take on the SA-35

The Ranger +P+ is certainly a serious step up from standard 9mm. Obtaining that load is perhaps difficult for many shooters. The SA-35 is 9mm excellence. I will stick with one of my 1911 units, .45, running hot 🔥 230 grain, hollow points.

Discussion: Ayoob: My Take on the SA-35

Be sure and try out the EMP 4" CC. Not a double stack, but light and sweet.

Discussion: Should I Put Optics on My 1911 (or Not)?

Mission dependent. For carry, I don't want stuff hanging off my pistol. Laser grips and night sights are ok, as they don't affect the profile.

Discussion: Ayoob: The 1911 at War

While I have some 9mm pistols for economical practice, including a Wilson Combat, my concealed carry units are always 1911 .45ACP, with heavy, 230 grain loads. Even with the quality 9mm ammo police use today, seeing repetitive, poor performance in firefights, makes the .45 look better all the time.

Discussion: Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns

My first holster many years ago was the Bianchi X15 for my aging GI 1911. A bit later when I bought my all steel Commander, I went for the OWB unit. A jacket, vest, or shirt always worked fine. I am of small stature. I favor hard hitting, heavy .45 loads over capacity. Spare magazines offer...

Discussion: Was the 1911’s Grip Safety a Mistake?

Back in the cavalry days - which still included some threads in WWII, safety on horseback was a very big deal. And fully understanding the operation of semi-automatic pistol was new technology for military staff. I favor the grip safety as a non-issue but, if a manual safety is present, it...

    Discussion: Ayoob: Why I Don’t Want a Custom 1911

I have a variety of 1911 pieces, including two tires, surplus units. One is actually very accurate. I find Ayoob to be extremely knowledgeable, and have two acquaintances who have taken his courses. I don't agree with everything he advises but, the reason the 1911 is vastly more popular today...

Discussion: Ayoob: Is .45 Still Better Than 9mm?

Actual shootings contain infinite variables, making any best handgun/caliber choice very subjective. If I could be certain of multiple hits during a high-speed mag dumps, there are some very good ,22 mag cartridges and pistols that will swiss-cheese a violent opponent in seconds. With the...
