10 must have caliber and platform

Sigh.

So, I’ve owned 10mm’s long before it was cool—close to 30 years.

1006 & 1076, Glock 20’s & 30’s, Delta Elites, Witnesses…and a few others.

It’s not the powerhouse its fanboys claim it is, but it is damn flexible—loads from .40 S&W levels up to HOT .357 Mag are commercially available—which is, imho, its greatest strength.

I’m seriously looking at one of these right now…

I've probably had this one for at least 20 years. I think Glock still makes a 20C.

So—TOTALLY misread the post, and responded before I read the article..

Oopsaf***.

So—must have calibers and platforms, HG style:

.22 LR; good rifle, either bolt or semi, with bolt preferrred (Stevens 15, Ruger 77, et al). Pistol for bonus points—Browning Buckmark or Ruger MK series; extra credit for a Colt or S&W revolver.

.38 Special. S&W K-frame (M&P/Model 10, 12, 13, 15…serious cred for pre-model number varietals), or a J-frame (36, 37, 42, 60…et al). Colt Police Positive, Diamondback, Dick Special…all hail the Viper owners.

.357 Magnum: S&W N-frame; K&L good as well, J-frame for the masochists…Colt Python, Trooper, King Cobra, Boa…and even a kindly glance towards the Speed/Security 6 and GP100…Blackhawk’s are a nice alternative. SAA’s? Bow down.

(To be continued)

I have all 10 calibers and all 10 recommended firearms with only two differences. First, my preferred .30-30 is a Winchester. Second my longest barreled .357 is 6.5". Oh well. No biggie.
Only one I don’t have is the Garand; sold my last one last week. Don’t even have a bolt ‘06, unless I misremember.

And my .308’s are HK91’s and AR10, not M1A’s.

The Garand/M14 platform is overrated.

Not sure I'd put 7.62x39 or .30 Carbine on a "must have" list.

And then there's this gem:

"My second choice, again only because of availability and the numbers, would be the .223 Remington. Notice I said .223 and not 5.56x45mm. The reason for that is weapons chambered in either caliber will all safely fire from the .223 Remington. However, those chambered in .223 cannot safely fire the 5.56."

That is correct.

5.56 can shoot .223, but not all .223 can shoot 5.56. It’s a leade issue.

The opposite is true when you go to 7.63x51/.308; .308 chambers can take both calibers, but it is unsafe to shoot .308 in a 7.62x51 rifle.

I'm well aware that a platform chambered for 5.56 can shoot 5.56 as well as .223, while the opposite is not true. My issue is with the wording:

"....weapons chambered in either caliber will all safely fire from the .223 Remington."

For someone who has no idea and is new to all this, suggesting that something will fire "from the .223 Remington" makes it sound like you are referring to the platform itself. You shoot ammo from a platform, not the other way around. The word "from" shouldn't be in the sentence at all. It should just be saying, "weapons chambered in either caliber will safely fire .223 Rem ammunition."

But also, beyond that, the article is supposedly about "calibers and platforms." The author states that he specifically chose .223 Rem. - why would you recommend a platform chambered in .223 when you could recommend a platform chambered in 5.56, which is safe for both and gives you even more options? The picture even shows an AR, but who buys ARs only chambered for .223?

Not that I have high expectations of the people churning out CTD blog pablum.

I have most of these guns they suggest I thinks it a pretty good list

    I have all the listed guns except the 30-30. I’m not a fan of 9mm, but I own a Kel-tec Sub 2000.
I agree the 22lr is a must. I can carry a LOT of 22lr if I have to bug out. But I will be bugging in and family will try to make it to me.
As for my dislike of the 9mm. I was a respiratory therapist for a bunch of years; so I saw my share of trauma. Persons shot with 9mm often were talking. 45 ACP not so much.
I really really like my 30 mcarbine. If ammo were not a dollar a round; I would shoot it more often than my 22lr’s. It is a fun gun to shoot. I read the ballistics info , in an article, it is impressive for such a sweet light recoil round. The article stated that the ballistics of the 30 carbine at 100 yards, was equal to a 357 at the muzzle.
Gotta love the gem from Bob noting his disdain for 9MM…

The age old debate, 9MM vs .45 (not to mention .40S&W

Right.

So, I had 3 out of 10 (.22LR, .38spl, and .357 Magnum) of the caliber/platforms accounted for.

Let us continue.

.45acp: get a 1911. It’s the perfect platform for the caliber. If you simply must have a plastic fantastic .45…get a HK USP. I have spoken.

.44 Magnum—S&W 29/629. A Ruger SBH is acceptable as an alternate.

Moving now more to long guns…

5.56–an AR if you simply must be one of the lowing herd. An AUG, or HK93, or AR180, or a Tavor, or Hellion, or a Bren (etc) if you’re not. AR’s bore me; haven’t seen one that excited me for 10+ years.

7.62x39–AK or SKS…although a VZ.58 is a great option. Or a HK32 clone.

Lever gun in one of the pistol calibers you have—.22, .357, .44…it’s a good companion.,

12Ga. Choose your poison. I’d say a Benelli M1/M2, M3 or M4…but a Mossy 500 is a good call too.

.308; branch out. A good precision bolt rifle, and a decent semi auto. I like the HK91 or FAL for the latter, m’self; Savage 10/110 for the former.

Hans: Just funnin' with ya Dude.
Even though I do disagree.
No worries; it’s a discussion; we like what we like…as much as I’ve tried to love the Garand/M14, I just…don’t; and while it pained me to part with my last IH “Postage Stamp” model…I don’t miss it, and likely won’t replace it.

But, as I said…just because it’s US hardware, doesn’t mean it’s automatically #1 in my book.

Oh—and I DO still have an ‘06; forgot about the Winchester M1917…
