I would have loved to see info about things like over penetration. Is 10mm "too powerful" to use in an apartment or house? What about bad guys on the street? Do we need to worry that it will over penetrate and hit something or someone behind them? I did appreciate the info on the different grain ammo, but I am not sure if the Q was really answered.
Sure , of recent years most of the 10mm discussion has been in the context of * Bear Defense * , with gobs of penetration and energy . But your line of inquiry is also relavent . ( Jumping ahead , 10mm Can be suitable for those purposes , all comes to ammo selection .)
Philosophocally , think of 10mm as counterpart to .357 Mag Revolver
I.e. Desirable for its versitility , by being capable of using two different calibers , of different power levels .
In the 10mm Afficianado Community , the cliche biggest gripe is " All of the maindtream major mfg ammo is Too Weak ! It's virtually identical to .40 S&W velocity and performence . "
Ding , ding , ding ! That's exactly what Tansaucj is looking for . Think of " weak 10mm " , being like loading your .357 with .38 +P for home defense .
Being "only" same as .40 S&W , is still very potent for Duty / HD / SD context . I'm a big fan of 165gr for ( .400 bore size ) , but if you're a true believer in either 180 or 155 , options there too . LE didn't embrace the bandwagon to leave .40 because .40 wasn't very terminally effective . It was for ammo costs , and lower training / Qualifying expendatures .( A little oversimplified , but gives context to the discussion .)
But Bigfoot , l want the best of both worlds ! Gobs of energy , Plus not overpenetrate . You've got options there too .
The $$ Boutique ammo with lighter weight JHP . The concern there is ( what some would see as ) Under penetration , albeit with huge expansion . And recoil , but make your own evaluations of your shooting chops .
