with a variety of brands that sell 7, 8, 9 or 10 round single stack mags are they all compatible with all makes of handguns or are they specific to certain brands only? say sig mag in a colt or colt in a sa? regardless of who makes the mags for the brand what do i need too know? other than compact 1911's or a short grip models what do i need too know when deciding on a mag? just wondering as it seems the mag catches are all the same location as possible standardized in a way?

i prefer only 8 round mags, that to me, fits the styling lines of a 1911, meaning, they do not stick out like say a 10 round mag would.

i use Wilson Combat, or Nighthawk, as price wise, not only do they "fit" my budget, but after all the 1911's that i have are range guns, not self defense ones.

i rarely use factory mags that are 7 rounds, but i keep them, and leave them in the box for when i sell the gun. that way, the next owner gets a factory original.

since all my 1911's are range guns, i cannot justify a higher costing mag over Wilson and Nighthawk.

for all my 1911's, i take 7 mags to the range, letting me load up a box of 50 rounds...

the sig factory 8 rounders that came with the 1911 fit flush with the sig-x.

just wasn't sure if all 1911 mags fit all 1911's of the same cartridge in single stacks as there's not many double stack 10's and 45's out there that i know of and will use only their mags for now until i know otherwise.
 
I run primarily Wilson and Chip McCormicks but Ed Brown, Les Bear and such will be fine.

There are a lot of gun companies that use the same magazine manufacturers (like MecGar ACT etc) but no matter the make they should all fit if you have the right size. Obviously an officers mag won’t fit a Commander or full size but they should be standard across makes
 
There are some that are proprietary, most are not but you can sometimes have issues with the cut out for the magazine catch.

This is from Wilson Combat:

I have 16 1911 magazines, 3 are 7 rounders from SA. To be honest the blued 7 rounders that came with the TRP CC gun seem chintzy. The rest are 8 rounders. 3 from SIG. The remainder are Wilson Combat. All of them work fine in my Colts, SIGs, S&W, and SA pistols. I really like the Wilson Combat mags, workmanship is excellent, and they feel.like quality. Same with the SIG mags. I run 100-200 rounds through them every week and they all have been trouble free.

100% agree on the mags that came with the TRP. I actually thought they were a mix up during packaging and the real magazines were left out. Being flush fit is the only positive thing I can say. Love the dang gun though.
 
For carry or competition I only use the Wilson 8 rounders for .45acp. They're the most reliable mags I've found. (y)
But they are kinda pricey. I have a bunch of cheaper mags for range use. Got a bunch of Ed Browns on their magazine trade in program. You send them your junk and they sell you their mags at about half price.

Along with my Wilson mags I have a bunch of other mags I use at the range. I have a couple of ParaOrdnance mags that came with a 1911 that I use as training aids. I can always count on those mags to have a few fail to feed in a shooting session. Good malfunction drill as I can't predict when they'll occur. I have some CM shooting star mags and several colt 8 rounders that have shooting star followers. I acquired these mags before I made the committment to real quality mags. All of my mags have bumpers added to make sure mags get seated properly during drills. All of the mags mentioned fit properly in all my various 1911.

As a side note, I think Smith&Wesson made a smart marketing move whe they included Wilson Combat mags when they introduced their M1911.

If it makes any difference in the conversation I'm using several different mags in my 9mm Ronin lightweight. I have the one 9 rnd. that came with the pistol, some 10 rnd.Mec Gar, and a couple of Ed Brown 9. I like the EB mags to edc as they don't have a bumper, they don't print in edc like the Mec Gars. All function as designed and I've had no reliability issues.
