1911 Types

Good question Tiny. My 10mm Ronin 5" barrel is 5" measured from the muzzle to the very tip of the protrusion on the top of the barrel (which has a notch for viewing if chamber is loaded). No idea what that protrusion is called,...but the 5" includes the chamber. Looks like the actual barrel is only about 4". The models reference design updates of which I am not well-informed...except that 1911 aficionados love some more than others.
 
The gun Gods want things to be confusing. With a pistol, the length includes the chamber. With a revolver, the length is only the barrel itself (muzzle to forcing cone) and not the chambers. They're part of the cylinder.

Model 80 describes a specific style of 1911 firing pin safety which is deactivated by pressing the trigger, as opposed to a “Swartz Safety” which is deactivated by the grip safety.
 
you know, i have been trying to find the reason why the end of the hood, there is that "protrusion", along with the cut out. (notch)

well for one, the cut out is to check for a loaded chamber.

but regarding that tiny bit of that protrusion..that has that notch....???

i am wondering if by the design of the barrel to the frame, to the slide, to the ejection port, if that tiny bit of that protrusion is to keep the blow back gases in the gun, and not spray out, as in the case of a revolvers' forcing cone to the wheel..????

just my best guess, cuz i can't find a dang thing to explain it

Old Me, my best guess is that it is a machined stop, so that the barrel/chamber align properly on the breech face for firing...but it is only a guess. That, or so that they can call it a 5" "Full-Size" instead of a 4.9" whatever-size...:giggle:

One thing about which I'm pretty sure is that old JMB didn't do anything just for $#!*$ and grins. He had something in mind. ;)

I thought you had something coming off the hood - or maybe the vertical end of the hood was cut at an angle rather than square…

yes, but @Jfal called it a "protrusion"

i am wondering/guessing if that bit of a "protrusion" is there to "seal the ejection port, to cut down on the blow back gases, as well a to help lock up the barrel, sorta a "double duty" function..??

"most" G'ment model 1911's have a 5" barrel.

once you get into officers or other configurations, the barrel lengths differ.

but then there are some 5" barrel 1911's, that are NOT G'ment models.

the one YOU are looking at IS G'Ment model.
