3 Day Range Report, 11/30/22-12/2/22

BassCliff

Professional
Greetings Patriots!

It was a good week! Mrs. BassCliff was out of town visiting her mother so I was able to visit the the range three days in a row. How about that! Instead of three different threads I'll just put all my practice sessions in subsequent posts. I didn't get crazy throwing lead downrange. I had a plan just to practice fundamentals at 10 yards and shoot only 50 rounds each from my XD9 and Garrison .45. Soon I need to practice some more single hand and off hand for defense purposes. For these sessions I was trying to fix little things, adjust grip, keep proper sight picture, etc, and get more consistent. Especially with the .45, I feel like I'm trying to keep the gun from moving at all. I feel like I'm still gripping REALLY hard just as the trigger breaks and causing the muzzle to pull low/left. It seems I shoot better when I don't try so hard. Let me show you all the holes I put in the paper.

On Wednesday I shot a little extra 9mm. I had a half box left over from a previous training session. I got my favorite lane at Fletcher Arms and got set up to have my fun.

AL9nZEXjUK9ko9Xkm5lq9nt4Vitegv4iHvfL4mQ7lEU26BFFmMzT-OL5cHXuOC0t2daqGqa51nd_4iADgldPVKPrEoF1k80O9sWKLfYa3O_HqB4gntFlbYk7UOmNYg3cxvWse-W3WvtX0_D_KR12xh7flKlkyQ=w1236-h927-no

Today was just for the 1911 Garrison .45 and XD9. I brought my timer just in case. It turns out that I got to use it for one drill.

AL9nZEVEXN9RTcFL1hhHNkh24ybHmvabWutgGPqHQHiwCrVSxmkszdqRMQvKgDUXbN4VHakYZ7lgpVVkq2asgI1E43sp_OWiUJ_UPLGWw9q28sTnKfJ2JMJM7lgg2ZTPtpgWA8Vm3hLR030w0iGaDzOSMTBdGQ=w1236-h927-no

I have two CMC 10 round magazines for the 1911 as well as three 7 round units. I like shooting 10 round strings at each target but sometimes I'll just shoot two or three of the 7 rounders. Depends on my mood. I've been using LAX Ammunition's .45ACP, their store brand. It works well. I put 50 rounds from their loose can in an old box so that I can keep track of the number of rounds used.

Today when I arrived the range was pretty quiet so I started with a cold 10-10-10 drill. For not running this drill for a while I thought this wasn't bad. Using the Larry Vickers scoring (90 or better to pass, one second penalty for each hit out of the black), from low ready, my first shot was at 1.33 seconds and the 10th shot was 7.03 seconds. It would've been a passing score of 92 but I missed the par time by 0.03 seconds. Drat.

For grins and giggles, here's the video. (Sorry @KillerFord1977.)

The rest of my targets were slow fire. Funny that target #2 was worse than #1 even though I took my time. But the targets generally got better as I "warmed up" and really thought about fundamentals.

AL9nZEVIhuNL-VOb29G_yP75V884-cso8CSU7CsPVFdC4r_ERGYA4SI2NaV2FSZxfAM1E4dekXA7I1UK2E2x5oMmxeC3p5rISD4kLEEgYzk4312opueXZSwuhgHwuYZ061hEpWjW2oIwyvaBwJ4fy4fv3dTCHQ=w1236-h927-no

This has got to be some kine of mental block. Seven hits in the 10 ring with three in the 7 ring. Meh.

AL9nZEUeLleDytklJpfSUSY4dsHdMYoYTOFcpSOMk4nWwxYIYDcEtdAJ5FmZsgNRc--yp6uUpulq-hUpKDSZTf8iSKiPep0qdyl44qd6XuC8qt0gs61M-l8o8m2-LjAo6XrlaPo6KE7KrwKCM-Xk2ihSQrnT7w=w1236-h927-no

#4, again seven hits in the 10 ring but only one out of the black.

AL9nZEVybaIh6CnVVvJkTiJBxOLZyzxbzoAiSQaoa1chWn89kYXQobtr-Vc5ziwDkUHg0mXG3fYHasoEU4NrbIax8fy-JQqrqUcyFhGY9GpO2NGpOgcBj8r8vLo6KHvDUdY5RpV2EiyGPtd8CEBjXTCiZnBFaQ=w1236-h927-no

Then disaster struck. As I was bumping the target up toward me to affix another center, the line broke on the carrier. Oops.

AL9nZEXpSeY8WcJr0_53LKJvEZErA8RJVGLEb6QWBUi3iwbFPFCsSslzPzWqwwjNc5qCXuaSoXUOW0V_BD2YKaUPuJy2VikPKWB47nOOk53tZEKUAPCxuR95vMchCOkeLQaYfJMv4MfvfDQsruJYdQsfT2rNsA=w1236-h927-no

So I just moved over to my other favorite lane, #9, and continued my practice. Here's target #5. Breaking the carrier must've messed with my head. This is pretty lousy.

AL9nZEWkLx4UBcU_J850F0sKRPY3JVIg6hJGkng9ufLi1MRvpBojje2XToVu_kDBy4yXr80YqAledisoGfl1BTE3bvWhio0PIU_rH-J5hNHkCvipyBiro5RImbHP6-piDLKjI7ETYIxdUkbLr43q2CTlNTpVPQ=w1236-h927-no

Target #6 was one of my better ones today, all in the black.

AL9nZEVc4hSXeV6xkc7Gv6xIhF2b-uvv9sqeWG9umEkyyWdty_NcyyGJt5qyz3cMkDnyeHofHKu_3JyDoVs_viWMmV9MIQ7aWSmltavHYfjJQQn9y5vKtlyXccuPjvYDqudKYGR08HA0DOmO1Hwlp8guY0u3Tw=w1236-h927-no

Target #7, only three in the 10 ring but one in the 8 ring as well. (Line break!)

AL9nZEUq90xhhjyi8qxns5_PIcrY3vZoBlAEbp7FqEAkZxZIr78cxsB2ET7Af3IHoGUZjK4uuu1deA05jAu6pVn1MHNycD8ZofGoXtq4xw-mciFVFjo6l4bC4or0Hsg8J30mxn56zzezQpskQtMClp-UN7_6KA=w1236-h927-no

Believe it or not, I'm now out of B-8 centers. So I pulled out a couple of 1/3 size USPSA targets. One of these days I'll get all ten hits in the Alpha box.

AL9nZEUEAg_6uCI7cV9HLWJOyq62deMajQBenU9mzrzaZdLphBB5e_6km3SQP2gOggwolK_33eO4SOLJEyvogvWpGJhTfbIQNbTTSPB2WzQHCQA5peWk4HtpuQNJutIhxQCdOqXQPFtyM53eIkmtdyokc-w72g=w1236-h927-no

To finish up the half box I had left over from last week, I put only five shots on my last XD9 target. This makes 85 rounds through the XD9 today.

AL9nZEWER7r47C2cDGFpSEhYTn0WkLOwr7_KQysns1La9TC55hau5QGaekshnEdcWzChsyCRWTKf9MWe1tVTBPDShbqr7T7vi3ppvc_Ia8PXFoYv_akeTGMor90Vrlta8ZYJa0A7J1X0EibTaCDdC86Qkuq1bQ=w1236-h927-no

I brought out some 8" reactive circles and used them on my B-8 target to start my Garrison practice. I thought "shoot'n'see" would be fun.

AL9nZEXyPZijFGVZKnCnXE6kjwK8KAIyaP0RAdZXW7Xvt6zcyfJD6BBJQgxhoY2iq4UfRT4KAXuM92T4Sy4cNMxtHWA8LtYS5lduPgs4Ol9E2VjpyV3Yptew_cNOaVeHZc6wJ9Po8YFie8q3O-NSHgizpHcm9A=w1236-h927-no

After the first ten rounds, seven actually made it onto the reactive circle.

I patched up the circle and put more holes in it. You'll find four hits outside of the 8" circle. Pfffft!

I stuck on a new 8" reactive and taped up the paper. Then I shot all three 7 round magazines at this target. More than half of these were low/left.

AL9nZEW_1QJhF5Wbws7HaUKBKFErmypfIW8vOH9KAoKim0xfhajLxpDJqK0KcBb0PBd3niqkwJGGYWM3Xf_LvRksbyXPDTReRj8DzKkYhpEiHMNOHTJw3dgbcimDgC8p1agkLiTu57xIjh1x2BrfYGppHGSGMA=w1236-h927-no

For the last target I had an odd number of .45 cartridges left. I loaded my last nine and put them on a fresh target. Not too bad but still low and left.

After I had my fun for the day, I enjoyed one of my favorite local brews.

Hints of caramel and apple, not too hoppy, smooth, very drinkable, and pairs well with just about anything.

There you have it, my range report and beer review. In the next post I'll continue with more of the same. Thanks for looking!

Hi!

The next day, 12/1/22, I visited the newer facility at Fletcher Arms Lake Country. The range was a little busy when I arrived but I was able to procure lane #8, my favorite!

AL9nZEVb_MPOxK0zbeJWWFklqTZmN9P506YECmYpYxZgMcwLP2cq0GbHwiusGTSp_Cri2utXQIHn0_YCPZcxGHaT8G1iQoyND5JdXAEto9izrsxrKxa7qSdC9fEaQkTXZ4u3EcWZMBKMDkTIMP0VXYWAEVgVpA=w1236-h927-no

I brought a few targets and set up my kit. I like this place because of the touchscreen target carriers.

AL9nZEWvUA68YQ0BeOB5xXS6MTFd2LERPoQ6zR0kv7AHpZK4oSulfDVvVmVQdYdB7Mx1p-yBm48x6sY6AveYNvCJbx-ig9JnyEiI9h4Bj5boepc7ER8wIW8kcykH2XmXRaLjrGrZ7Iwe-NyqgsYLPxDHyzZZpA=w1236-h927-no

Today I brought some 9mm ammo that's a little different. I found a couple boxes of Federal Syntech, this is the 150 grain bullet. I remember shooting these pretty well several months ago and forgot I had any left. The synthetic coating on the lead looks like a little lipstick.

AL9nZEXm6fLK7w3-FEgCAvEx-fWu8dV9A3UIs5c8tKY5pyM_JIiWNS3Z5hZtAVemOGouTKO9jfFzC0Vvp049m2yT_1tHBPQsQMpARkxeTiE--vppJdDDoVQ_at1g_sk7wp-g6RszomOuEAbd6aZ5rcstqmWg8w=w1236-h927-no

For .45ACP I'm still shooting the LAX Ammo house brand. You can pick up either new or reman for a good price. For all of the this three day session I shot at 10 yards, 30 feet. My thinking is once I can consistently get ten hits in the 10 ring I'll start practicing at greater distances.

AL9nZEWcx9VCdh3nJNo9JJP8vPaOUyATp0TADy7_Bgpoysb6FpJIY7W4XseVOfioI_HXADV7gCIaropnHI7dCv4qySMeRIdqQEXXPZriLdb2Ogn0TSuvH8aj7OHC_v9s6OCedfHMdpKtG86WcitbuWi4WLlS1w=w1236-h927-no

Today I practiced with my Garrison first. Here's the first string of ten.

Since I remembered to print up some new B-8 centers, I'll tape on a new one and keep practicing.

AL9nZEWceR_L3ZaJHfNF79Clw_hcWMEit3w6Igx8mFMRSuURV-sCu5VmYGGBFYpF_ZMugJCqM_hZ8S21T9krl1Gv3RyBpxSoGRhzX6qgw_80zIJ8epu3eVh6rvVF1IIsJWs368V2yc7o-gvVLynVyHXuFlxJpg=w1236-h927-no

Target #3 sees all the hits back inside the 7 ring. I guess it's not a large group, just low and left.

AL9nZEXMpa0VSY4HjANyWufdz6gqMy6ThQrbmexC16wll4ZLikHOtl8GhDqrsAAYMJl6JpOWiCtLU-bsTVZNpphYrWNY8FdgDKtfOPne6LBmgTZsl145da_iws-7cg3jtbclX_AXVHj630oPV9w8YS7pRAJ6wQ=w1236-h927-no

Target #4 shows some improvement. Today I was shooting 10 shot strings. I'd fire seven then change the magazine. Perhaps taking the extra time allowed me to utilize more fundamentals.

AL9nZEVvT_bI41waiaIxEp_L_Q32Pn-d6IEYG_9O4C04Hk2tJrZpiyyEaRTymkOWHegQow29QtK690d3f_3ksAH5wgPUJUZWlWj4Q63tC8hKzDb3UuX2Oq5Xuq_seAWQwZDOLNLAbfUFbEPvHxZGSuIYirVGQg=w1236-h927-no

Oops, I guess I got impatient or over-confident. Target #5 really sent south.

AL9nZEVyFZ-eHWw-2eTXykzIwFCd5lCp-qXsnFAzs6Prb_yE6U__0x9sReeLrmBGA9WRgWcB8cFPvtLSOBbB16_8ede6ejg_ukdZenE_qzl7iRYp_b_AvQO2qLMxdvVEHDBxEVIiJ6R-GeMkC9geE5t9HWtMhg=w1236-h927-no

Just for fun, today I shot at the reactive silhouette with my XD9. This is the first mag. I think I totally missed the target once. I count only nine holes. Drat.

AL9nZEXzQ2MShG3hPZ1N6rEoKhi_ypvVgEE-hXQ25CrI0td2sWPHcGFA3AsIWyqV4d3CRKoEaitdV9PMrQOImZ_3gcffyN2HJge7o08c9fKvBEiDLs_quaUKUETBtcnDSD_ga9dv-h4tO_O_9ubq-Busd2OKBA=w1236-h927-no

I patched it up and put more holes in it. I noticed I was shooting low and made corrections with my grip.

Target #3 is starting to shape up with a more centered group.

AL9nZEUVrC2SniWFBpbtYRcSO9a0QzVqOyf4ud69z2_xchKZbIYcEkMDNMc7XqWM-4Nuk8idDb5hxr5L_0DtaXDJE5-9csswvoSfqC4LD585LrRNPcF8YWOKRBeMryIT4cRKmPorsbmtvNDobBXdYfQhWQh5Wg=w1236-h927-no

Target #4 looks pretty good, except for that one flyer.

AL9nZEVLJzEtNZSPwPX8_C-Vdk9d5fQSY-q65RLB544t50cseNbuX1qlLP7rxXBS_UKTM_rspTF6UduwGMCjt9m9NZg--PI_uytF2Hcw48mPhWOJgfpC8BKT4yQXCgk-gKJh39AK8QIx-dTxkBVGf6XjE9KhAA=w1236-h927-no

Target #5 looks a little better but the flyer looks a little worse. :ROFLMAO:

And since I'd brought it with me, I ended my session with a few relaxed cylinders from my little .22 cowboy gun at ten yards. This little pistol is fun.

AL9nZEVfOtMwMho4C0AbmYuyIEHtKrdNFU6x8h2BuRFav7D2ZcsyiBBKfglhISCCu2C1Yvwb5pdLYVWIZAnKcpLvxV1JLisgohjXLM3HYZAvP7Go9BTa3ZX3nIJDRdkAWT6U7p7cdbnO641wtcBLH2ojr3aJ3A=w1236-h927-no

This pistol is a little tricky to sight in. The light can play off the front sight and make you aim/hit high. Maybe I'll put some white fingernail polish on it.

When I arrived home I enjoyed another of my favorite beers. I'm a give fan of stouts and porters. This is a pretty good one.

I like the bitter coffee and vanilla of this beer, along with the adult malty-ness. This is not a girly beer. ;)

In the next post will be my third practice day in a row. This is a first for me. Thanks for coming along.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hello again!

For my third and final day at the range last week I visited the older facility of Fletcher Arms. Membership allows you unlimited access to both facilities. I've taken advantage of it this week! I got lane #7 again, my favorite! :ROFLMAO:

AL9nZEWNuUc0Spsu1E0uVY6-BfI3Fc5Sp9iAtNnTh_7NE--1goUiLhC1YqfLApo9sMm_U--Cn02tMHAnP1uiYUO6fZoBpjkJrdhE24S3E-hYDFDcqgHZtYGvGAexm7XsUTZuz7Hj1-fNOfqxibJn7EcF3F7Mww=w1236-h927-no

I was here to shoot only 50 rounds of 9mm and the same of .45ACP. For a change I loaded up my B-8 target with four more targets, loaded up five magazines, and sent it out to ten yards.

I started this session with my XD9, shooting this AAC ammo that I got from Palmetto State Armory for a pretty good price. Sometimes they have deals with free shipping.

AL9nZEU-6Z_aG7dU5WnZYBss3pQik4C2rPeqs2GwUKtQisiX62KXWRluwAG9DQ22PV953g5RvAj4YXUeAkF7KasWETivq-y3p9rl16GhQRH07aEpRsqdjP6ADLz9LMncdITavoxIwkIylYDLUS71zOm-GaDfOg=w1236-h927-no

These five targets came back with pretty average results. At least on targets #4 and #5 I kept all the hits on the 8" reactive.

Then I shot silhouettes with my Garrison. Not too bad, I guess. Still a little low left.

I'm starting to figure out how to relax just a bit and not squeeze so tightly just as the shot breaks. I really don't think it's recoil anticipation as much as it is a desire to control the gun so much and not let it move at all. I have to remind my brain that the gun is going to recoils regardless. I just have to keep the sight picture stable until the bang, not let it dip by gripping to hard just before the shot breaks. How about some more practice next week? OK? It's a date. :D

Thanks for putting up with me. You guys are the best.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi,

Don't worry too much on the low left shots. If you've ever seen a boxing match where a hard left hook lands in the liver area, the fighter is down immediately, doesn't get up quickly, and often ends the fight..

Thanks for that. It's certainly something to consider. I suppose for self-defense, "close enough" usually is. But I'd like to hit where I'm aiming most of the time. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
