.327 Magnum – A Good Caliber for Defense

A snub-nosed revolver makes for a handy little gun that can be carried year-round and is easy to operate. For years, plain-clothes police officers have carried these and considered themselves well-armed. Today, this type of gun appeals to people who are not gun people but who want to be armed.

Enter into this picture the .327 Federal Magnum. Taurus makes a small revolver in this caliber and so does Ruger.

I had high hopes for 327; but it seems to have faded from popularity, making the guns and ammo harder to find.

Magnum rounds typically require longer barrels for true magnum performance. With short(er) barrels you get a lot of blast and less (magnum) performance. IDK maybe the 327 gives magnum performance from short barrels

I have the 3" SS SP101. Taurus also has a 3" option. Definitely makes a difference, just as it definitely does with J frames (and similar) in other calibers. People get too caught up in their comfort and their convenience putting both ahead of their safety and remaining alive. Yes, my SP101 is heavier. About one can of soda heavier depending on which other gun is compared. Can't carry one extra can of soda? Poor you. And the best thing about the .327 is the same gun will fire .32 H&R Magnum all day and twice on Sunday as they say. And has an extra round in the cylinder compared to the usual .38s or the totally unmanageable 1-7/8" .357s. So yes, get a .327 and get the 3" and have the best of all worlds.

I had a serious "want" for the Ruger single action (Single Seven) in 327; but I could never find one. Back then I was in a Doc Holliday phase and carried two or three 45 Colt single actions and I thought the Ruger would make a nice shoulder holster gun

Info from the article that some likely didn't read....

  • 9mm Luger – 376 ft/lbs.
  • .357 Magnum – 535 ft/lbs.
  • .40 S&W – 484 ft/lbs.
  • .45 ACP – 404 ft/lbs.

Would have been nice if they gave the details, which bullet weight, what barrel length, any other pertinent information. .327 Fed Mag is even better with unicorn ammo. I got the last box of Speer Gold Dot 115gr. left in the U.S. At least that AmmoSeek knew about. So I bought it and I have unicorn ammo now. Don't know why they dropped that one and kept 100gr. which everybody and their dog loads still.

I’m a self professed fan boy. I do reload which is richly rewarded. I load the S&W long, H&R mag, and the Fed. This allows three power levels, in easily identifiable cartridge lengths. If I could I’d add a 3” SP-101. I can’t get past the ugly Ruger dipped the LCR in, might taste like fried chicken, but I’m not eating it.
