I was a young buck on a fire crew in western Oregon when one sunny work day we heard a bunch of thunder in a clear sky. When we got into our rigs were heard that St Helens had gone up, and after some driving we were able to see the eruption plume when we gained some elevation in the mountains.

We were ~100 air miles due south and didn't get any ash but it sure was an interesting summer as the mountain continued to do its thing.

I remember watching the events play out on the National News. I was 24 at the time, and I can't believe where the time has gone, (of course a lot of that time was spent drinking a few too many 🍺🍻).
