Of course the blue cities want your tax dollars for THEIR usages. Not sure I’d want 20% sales tax (isn’t UK VAT still 17%texas legalized gambling and with the lottery approved it was designed/meant for a certain percentage going towards public schools.........................it didn't last long as money went elsewhere. iirc it was 5%. with the county i live in being a wealthy school district as there is only 1 school in the county (this does include elementary, middle/jh and hs). then the robinhood tax crap started as our county money went to dallas or fort worth schools...................![]()

! if there was a fair tax system (sales tax being the only tax) of say 15-20% would people buy less or spend more knowing there was no more irs and/or property taxe(s)? with some states having state income tax and that amount (best icr) is taken off what is paid to the irs? there was a local banker that thought texas should have state income tax and i told him, move to those states if he wanted that tax!
someone from CA needs to weigh in on this as that's the only reference i have. it's basically what would go towards that state iirc from the feds.Of course the blue cities want your tax dollars for THEIR usages. Not sure I’d want 20% sales tax (isn’t UK VAT still 17%), but 10% wouldn’t kill me - heck been paying .0825 since I’ve lived here. I’m pretty sure a few more percent would still be WAY less than I pay annually in Federal taxes. But I don’t think the State can stop IRS from collecting Federal monies - which are the most wasted as far as I’m concerned. At least our local taxes go to police/fire/streets, etc. I’m pretty sure Texas could do a better job with SNAP and such, so maybe States should take over all that. Of course, the current blue States will be bankrupt in no time since they turn a blind eye to fraud and those illegally defrauding and dipping into their systems.
and i don't believe it's only the blue doing thatsomeone from CA needs to weigh in on this as that's the only reference i have. it's basically what would go towards that state iirc from the feds.
weird as they already passed that counties could not rack them up over a certain percent per yearOne of the proposed Texas amendments for Nov 2026 elections is a proposal to prohibit counties and towns from raising property taxes. Not to mention our Governor and Lt Governor is on a never ending mission to end property taxes. Not perfect for sure, but it’s nice to live somewhere where RAISE TAXES isn’t always the #1 answer to EVERYTHING!
Key Aspects of Abbott's Proposal (2026):
Criticisms and Challenges:
- Eliminate School Property Taxes: The central goal is to abolish the school district maintenance and operation (M&O) taxes, which make up the largest portion of property tax bills.
- Five-Point Plan: Includes reducing home appraisal caps from 10% to 3%, requiring 2/3 voter approval for local tax increases, and restricting local government spending.
- Funding Replacement: Abbott proposes using state budget surpluses to cover the funding gap for schools.
- Long-Term Strategy: The plan includes a constitutional amendment to shift taxing authority and eliminate these specific property taxes for homeowners.
- Funding Stability: Critics argue that using temporary budget surpluses for a permanent, recurring expense like school funding could leave schools vulnerable during economic downturns.
- Implementation: Opponents warn that replacing this revenue could necessitate significant sales tax increases, which are regressive, or other tax increases.
- Scope: The current proposals largely focus on eliminating taxes for homeowners, raising questions about how this affects commercial property and renters.
Currently for us older peeps as well…

Over 65 Property Tax Exemptions and Deferrals
This article discusses property tax exemptions and deferrals for taxpayers over age 65 and their surviving spouses.texaslawhelp.org
I think it’s to get them from making ridiculous home appraisals from year to year and to make it almost impossible to raise local taxes at all. 2/3 voter approval is a lot, so it would have to be pretty compelling reason(s) on the ballot. Not sure how I feel about restricting local government spending…nonsense stuff sure, but some spending is specifically needed in specific parts of the State.weird as they already passed that counties could not rack them up over a certain percent per year
i am so thankfull mine are in law that cant go up or be charged under 26 acres
folks around us got hammered after covid on tax increases

Once you have hit the age of SS, your property Taxes should be capped.
Also, once your home is paid off, govt should not be able to take your home for property tax purposes.
If the elderly cant pay property tax after its been paid for, eviction and take over is just wrong.
If someone refuses to pay taxes to the county, put a lien on it for proceeds from sale to pay the tax when they pass or move away.
Taking ones paid for home just pisses me off !!!

Can't disagree with this one either!!!IMO, Seniors have paid their dues. After a certain age or “X” amount of years they should be exempt from property taxes on their homes.
