600 rds 45 ACP done

yup, as the subject line says...i did 200 rds friday, and the remaining 400 today.

took me several hours, due to a sticking primer "birds beak" getting gummed up with left over primer crap.

the first time way back when i got it i used a thin paper clip, in place of the Dillon cotter pin, which bends and jams it.

this time. i used the thinnest nail i had in my spare parts drawers, thin but oh so much stronger than a paper clip, or Dillons cotter pin....

i am still about 250 rds short of the 2,000 inventory, so maybe tomorrow, if i have enough 45 bullets, i'll complete that.


this is the original 550C birds beak primer chute, (internet photo, not mine) and you can see the "weak cotter pin"..it bends very easily from constant dropping of primers that hit it...

i myself as i said, replaced that cotter pin with a "stronger" paper clip.

but after a few thousand rounds on the 550C, it too bent.

so now a thin nail takes its place.

i would have been done in like 3 hours, but thanks to stopping, cleaning and repairing, it took longer, so much so, i missed 3 DAMNED NAPS.......!!!!!!!!!!

that birds beak chute and the original Dillon cotter pin, has been an issue on the Dillon chat boards for quite some time, with many suggestions on how to fix it.
 
I used a RCBS single stage press for probably 3 decades. Then Cabela’s had the Brass Smith turret press on sale 50% off. Snatched it up and it makes reloading enjoyable again. I only load for my 45/70, 44 magnum, and 10mm. At $50-60 a box for ammo that’s the only way to afford shooting them. I’ll go through 100-200 rds when I take them to the range. I cast bullets for all 3 calibers also. Lyman, RCBS, Lee molds. The Lee mold is the 310 gr FNGC for the 44 magnum. Those at 1300 fps are enjoyable to shoot.
 
I've been reloading for about 40 years now. All on the same RCBS Rockchucker press that I bought used all those years ago. Some people really enjoy reloading and make a separate hobby out of it. That ain't me. I reload because I like to shoot. Nothing more. I consider it a necessary chore.
Therefore, I reload in bulk. Rifle ammo - 500 rounds or more. Pistol - minimum of 1000. I may sit at that press for 3-4 days, but when I finish I don't have to do it again for quite a while. Besides, I'm retired and have plenty of time.
However, with the scarcity and cost of powder and primers over the last few years, I actually find it cheaper to buy the more common calibers such as 9mm, 38 Special. 5.56 and such by the case. I save my limited supplies of powder and primers for the harder to find and more expensive calibers I shoot.

yeah, i checked my inventory, and i have no more factory 45 Colt.

so, i got the brass, and the lead bullets.

so maybe next weekend, switch over the tool head, then run a few rounds to dial it all in, and maybe make about 100 rounds, if i can find the old factory boxes......i don't shoot that particular gun all the much.

i made these dummy rounds back on this date in the picture, removed the bullets, never proceded to make any actual rounds. i wanted to get the roll crimp right.
