NOTE: I've had an identical (except for the optic, a old-school V24 Weaver 6-24X Classic) M700 VLS 6mm Remington since the late 90's.

The 6mm Remington is a bit of a forgotten cartridge but still offers impressive performance.

As the article's author says..."Outrun in its first race against the 243 Winchester, the 6mm Remington never really got the recognition or praise it deserved and arguably never will among most folks. However, those of us who have spent the time to get to know the cartridge and the rifles chambered in it know how they can hold a special place in our hearts."

And got/used mine for these reasons also..."as the 6mm Remington bucks the wind much better than most of its 22 caliber counterparts and is able to push bullets faster than the 243 Winchester thanks to a slight edge in case capacity."

I still have it although I've moved more to the 6mm CM, but both are great as "dual-purpose" Deer & Varmit cartridges.

V24 with Ballistic-X reticle.

Nice 👍

Many years ago had a Remington mod660 iirc in 6mm. It was superbly accurate and that was primarily attributed to the extra fast lock time. I sold it for a song and have regretted it ever since.

@Talyn - - That's a very nice looking rig! I'm betting that it shoots as well as it looks.

I once owned a Remington 600 in 6mm Rem, as well as a re-barreled Mauser 98 in 257 Roberts. The Remington 600 was fairly accurate and my favorite truck gun, but the custom barreled Mauser was dead-nuts accurate.

Both cartridges are based upon a necked down 7x57 Mauser cartridge case, and both are still excellent cartridges. I'm sad that neither gained the popularity needed to keep them in steady production. Factory ammo and components (cartridge cases) for both are still fairly easy to find, just not as easy as if they'd picked up a bit more of a fan base. When either one is fitted into a "long" action with a chamber throated out a smidge longer than SAAMI spec, they can really come into their own and can easily outpace their more stubby cartridge competition by a small margin.

@RedGoat

I also have a 257 Roberts (1982) but in the year-to-year "Classic" series than Remington made from 1981 to 2005. In that same series I have a .250 Savage (1984) and 300 Savage (2003 ), and had a 280 Remington but sold that to a guy who really love the 280.

Years ago I stocked up on cases when I saw the writing on the wall that 6mm Rem, 257R, .250Savage & 300 Savage cases were going on the periodic production schedule.

I forgot that I also have the 700 VLS in .204 Ruger and .308.

That's a very nice collection. Enjoy!
